Ebere could barely
make out anything from what Prof. Alex Igholo was saying at his own end, but
she tried so hard to make sense out of what Ify said, as the call went on for a
minute or two.
“Fine sir.” Ify said,
with her facial expression saying more than her two-words replies.
“No sir.”
“Tomorrow sir.”
“After class.”
“Ok sir.”
“Yes sir.”
“Ok sir.”
“I will.”
“Yes sir.”
“Bye sir.”
“Yes sir.”
“Bye sir.” She said
for the last time, as she ended the call.
Ebere was found in
total confusion, as she could not decipher what the conversation was all about.
“What was the call
about?” Ebere asked.
“It’s nothing.”
“Nothing?”
“Yes. Nothing. He just
wants me to submit the class assignment tomorrow.”
“Class assignment?”
“Yes.”
“When did you become
the Class Rep., or even the Assistant Class Rep.?”
“Ebere, you won’t
understand.”
“Hmmmmm…indeed. I just
hope it’s not what I’m thinking.”
“What are you
thinking? See Ebere, my major concern now is…”
“…is your boyfriend. I
get.” Ebere snatched the words out of her mouth.
Silence filled the
atmosphere with its fangs, as the two friend-became sisters embraced the
silence.
“I just pray he hasn’t
found out.” Ify thought aloud, breaking the silence.
“Found out what?”
“What?”
“You said something
just now.”
“I did?”
“Yes. You did.”
“Don’t worry. It’s
nothing.”
“Indeed.”
“I need to have my bath
now. I have a class by 9.” Ify said, as she got up to go to the bathroom,
changing the direction of the conversation.
“Help me unlock your
phone. I want to transfer my pictures from your phone.”
“Which pictures?”
“The pictures we snapped
yesterday with your phone when my phone was dead.”
“Oh! Ok.” Ify said, as
she unlocked the phone with her right index finger and handed it over to Ebere.
“Thank you.” Ebere
said.
===================================================
Marv’s phone buzzed
unendingly, and he was certainly not in the mood for mobile phones. Time was
really against him, and he could not afford to waste even a minute, not after
the time the taxi driver and the other passengers have wasted with their “no
change” saga. As he alighted from the taxi, he ran as fast as he could carry his
legs into the company’s reception.
“He just came in sir.”
Marv heard the receptionist said to someone over the intercom in her sonorous
voice, and he prayed so hard the ‘he’ was not referring to him. The look on the
receptionist’s face after she dropped the call said otherwise.
“Was that the
manager?”
“Yes. This is the
second time he is calling to ask if you’re around already.”
“And what did you tell
him?”
“What else would I
tell him?”
“You no fit even cover
for person at all.”
“Cover for you and
lose my job. Where I go talk say you go early this morning?”
“Anywhere na. You fit
even tell am say I go see one client.”
“You go see one
client, and you never even sign in for today. Abeg, I no want lose my job ooooo.
Abi, why you sef no quick come?”
“Abeg, it’s ok. Na
when una need person help una dey do sorry-face.”
“Na you sabi. Manager
sha say make you come him office after you don sign in.”
“I should come to his
office?”
“No. He should come to
your office.” The receptionist replied sarcastically.
Marv was short of
words. He didn’t know which he should worry about first; the receptionist’s
sarcasm, the manager’s invitation or even his buzzing phone. He made his
decision to ignore the receptionist, and attend to his phone on his way to the
manager’s office.
“Check your Whatsapp.
There are some messages there that would interest you.” He read a text from his
phone as he brought it out, with the buzzing sound coming to an end almost
immediately. The number that sent the text was an unfamiliar number not saved
on his phone at all.
“Who could this be,
and what could interest me?” He asked himself, as he put his phone back in his
pocket.
“It can never get
worse than it is presently.” He thought, bracing himself up to face the
manager, and whatever he has to say. But little did he know that what lies
ahead is far greater than the doctor’s report he got 2 weeks ago.
