“With all its beautiful ‘perfections’ and amazing features, mobile phones, without doubt has been a life-saver to many. It has greatly increased the level of communication between people with wide distance barrier, and it has also taken communication to yet another level entirely. From the comfort of your room, you can communicate effortlessly with someone miles away, with additional option of video calling the person for a better communication experience. Unarguably, mobile phones are like gods we humans can pay homage to, once in a while.”
Ify could hear her
inner voice recounting almost all she said during her advocacy for mobile
phones at an Inter-university Oratory Contest held a year ago. With her strong
advocacy and oratory prowess, she and her colleagues were able to grab the
trophy for her school. But, as she kept using the same mobile phone she
advocated for to call her boyfriend without response, she could not help but
feel betrayed by mobile phones.
“He is still not
picking.” Ify declared to Ebere, her roommate, who was half-awake.
“What did you say?”
Ebere asked, with closed eyes.
“He is still not
picking.”
“Who?”
“Who else?”
“Oh! You mean your
boyfriend?” Ebere thundered, sitting up.
“Yes! I’ve been
calling him since, and he is not picking.”
“Maybe he is busy.”
“Busy? Was he also busy
yesternight when I called him?”
“Hmmmmm…maybe.”
“But you spoke with
him yesterday morning.” Ebere said as an after-thought.
“You mean when he told
me he is busy, and that he would call me later?”
“You see? I told you
he is busy.”
“Really? But he could
have called when he got back home last night. He didn’t, and when I called
still, he didn’t pick.”
“Hmmm…well, I don’t
know what to say. Has he been online?”
“That’s exactly my
concern. His social media presence has dropped drastically, and he barely reply
my Whatsapp messages.”
“Babe, you need to
calm down. No go kill yourself because of boyfriend oooo.”
“That’s why I dislike
distance relationship, it comes with different heartaches.” Ify thought aloud
with her phone pressed against her right ear, anticipating a response from the
other end of the phone.
“Could you please stop
calling him. You’ve called him more than 5 times since I’ve been awake, and
only God knows how many times you’ve called him before you woke me up with your
complains.”
“You won’t
understand.”
“Ok. I admit. I won’t
understand. But please, just give me the phone for now.” Ebere said, as Ify
handed her phone to Ebere, and she placed it beside her.
Ebere was more than a
roommate to her. She was also not just a friend, but a sister. They both
started as next-door neighbours during their “Jambito” (fresh students) days, and
as their friendship grew stronger, they spent more nights in each other’s room,
after hours of reading and chatting together. Their sisterly cord grew stronger
in their 2nd year, after Ify moved in with Ebere’s as a roommate, forfeiting
her own room.
“I am so worried right
now.” Ify confessed.
“You don’t have to…”
Ebere was interrupted
by Ify’s phone which rang so loud. Ify jumped up with absolute anticipation,
trying to reach for the phone.
“You wait na!” Ebere said,
rebuking Ify’s futile effort at reaching for the phone.
“Abeg, bring am on
time before the phone go end.” Ify pleaded.
Ebere reached for the
phone, she looked at the screen to see the caller, trying to climax Ify’s
suspense.
“It’s ‘Prof. Alex
Igholo’.” Ebere read out the name on the screen.
“Prof. Alex?”
“Yes. Why do you look
shocked?” Ebere asked, as she handed the phone over to Ify.
“You won’t
understand.” Ify said, starring at her
phone.
She was so certain
that her friend would not understand the entire story that surrounds Prof.
Alex’ call. But, deep in her heart, she wished she could share it with her
friend.
“Understand what?”
Ebere asked.
“Hello sir!” Ify said,
as she picked the call, ignoring Ebere’s question.
