“Sir, what is it you want from me again?” Ify asked Prof. Alex Ighalo with edible fury.
“See, you have to calm down. The issue on ground now is beyond the two of us.”
“Of course, it is. Why won’t it be. You’ve got what you want already.” Ify fired back. Her eyes painted with bright colours of hatred.
“It was because I was with my roommate yesterday when you called, that was why I replied you with all calmness. But God knows how much I hate you for what you did.” She added.
“My dear…”
“Who is your dear?” Ify interjected, raising her voice a little beyond normal.
“Please don’t shout.”
“Then, don’t say things that would make me shout.”
“It’s ok. I’m sorry.”
“Please, why am I here? Afterall, I’ve done all you’ve asked of me, and I’m trying to put that phase of my life behind me.”
“How do I say this? God, help me say this the right way.” Prof. Alex Ighalo thought, adding some words of prayer. Almost immediately, it occurred to him that he is not worthy enough to pray to God. He knew for certain that God has already turned His back on him; he deserved it, and even more.
“I asked a question.” Ify said, jarring Prof. Alex Ighalo back to reality.
“Hmmmm…Yes…yes. The…the thing…is that…hmmmmm…” Prof. Alex Ighalo stammered.
“The thing is what?” Ify asked with a death stare.
“I can’t tell her this. I can’t.” He told himself conclusively.
“I just want to tell you I am sorry.”
“You said that after you got what you wanted.” Ify fired back.
“Ok. That’s all I want to say.” Prof. Alex Ighalo replied.

Ify’s anger rose beyond boiling point that she felt like strangling Prof. Alex Ighalo right on the chair he sat. She didn’t want to oblige his request to meet with him in his office, but she thought he had something important to say.

“So, I came all the way to his office just to be apologized to?” She asked herself, as her self-worth dropped few more feet below ground level.

Since the day she yielded to Prof. Alex Ighalo’s threat to fail her if she didn’t ‘follow due process’, her inner peace had gone on exile. MTH 316 was a notorious course many students fail without limit, and with Prof. Alex Ighalo taking the course, she knew for certain that she needed more than prayers to pass the course.

“The 3 people I called their names should see me after the class.” Prof. Alex Ighalo announced after one of his classes. Ify’s name was not missing from the list, and she didn’t need anyone to tell her it was about the test she missed.

“Sir, I was so ill that I was hospitalized in the school clinic. That was why I missed the test sir. I can bring the doctor’s report if you want sir.” Ify pleaded her case later that day at Prof. Alex Ighalo’s office.
“I don’t need to see the doctor’s report. Just do the right thing, and you will pass.”
“I don’t understand sir.”
“You don’t understand? Well, you can ask your course mates that came in before you. They’ll explain to you in details.”
“Ok sir. I will ask them sir.”
“Do you really want to pass my course?” Prof. Alex Ighalo asked, getting up from his chair.
“Do you know you’re a very beautiful girl? And I can make sure you pass all your courses with straight-As in this department.” Prof Alex Ighalo assured, touching Ify’s laps.

The AC in Prof Alex Ighalo’s office did not help Ify at all, as sharp cold ran down her body.
“I will ask them sir.” She repeated.
“Ok. I will be expecting you.”
Ify raced out of Prof Alex Ighalo’s office without looking back. She didn’t need to ask anybody what she needed to do to pass Prof Alex Ighalo’s course. It was as she ran, it fully occurred to her why Prof. Alex Ighalo decided to meet with them individually.
“I don’t need to sell myself to pass a course. I’ll rather read hard to score enough to scale me through the course.” She assured herself.

During the exam, the questions looked more difficult than she expected, and it was as if Prof. Alex Ighalo specifically made the questions difficult for her sake. After the exam, she knew her chances of passing the course were beyond slim. Three days later, Prof Alex Ighalo called her that he had marked her script, and she failed woefully, selling his ‘redemption’ message to her.
“I would make sure you don’t graduate from this school unless you ‘follow due process’.” Prof Alex Ighalo threatened, and in a matter of days, Ify was begging to be ‘redeemed’.

“I just want to tell you I am sorry.” Prof Alex Ighalo’s words rang in Ify’s head, as she couldn’t help the memories flooding her mind.

“I am so sorry.” Prof Alex Ighalo said again, or she thought she heard him say.

She knew she had lost her self-worth before the man who sat on the chair opposite her, and there was nothing she could do about it. Her major concern was her boyfriend not finding out about this deep secret of hers, even though she was not sure how long she would keep it from him.

“Can I go now?”
“Yes…yes… You can go. I…I am very sorry.” Prof. Alex Ighalo apologized again. Almost immediately, he watched Ify stormed out of his office, banging the door without mercy. He was not pleased with himself, as he couldn’t bring himself to tell Ify about the major reason for inviting her to his office.

“I think I should send her a text.” Prof Alex Ighalo thought, as he brought out his phone to compose a message. After composing the message, he searched his contact to select his recipient; “Ifeoma (Big Breast)”.

Ify had definitely not gone beyond the school gate when her phone buzzed. She opened her brown leather bag to bring it out. As she unlocked the phone with her right index fingerprint, her attention was drawn to a new text message notification from “Prof Alex Ighalo”. She wanted to disregard it, but she thought otherwise. As she opened the message icon, she became a statue on the spot upon reading the message.
