=====THE DAY TODAY DIED (Episode 10)=====

Click HERE to read Episode 9 of the story

Throughout that day, Marv wasn’t his usual self. He was not sure if he was living or if he was a walking dead man. His thoughts were not aligning at all. On several occasions, he imagined Ify moaning under her lecturer. He didn’t have a visual representation of the lecturer, but his imagination gave him a picture of an ugly man with big potbelly, and that annoyed him more. He didn’t know what to bother himself with at the moment. Either the HIV result, his girlfriend’s sexual encounter with her lecturer, or even his un-met target for the month at work. His life seemed to have so much going on at a goal, and that totally destabilized him. He was so destabilized that he had trekked half the distance before remembering he ought to take a taxi to work. Even when he got to work, he totally forgot he was to sign in, until the receptionist called his attention to it.

“Good morning Mr. Marv. You’ve not signed in.” The receptionist said.
“Mr. Marv!” The receptionist shouted.
“Yes! Good morning.” Marv replied, snapping out of his absent-mindedness.
“You’ve not signed in.”
“Oh! That’s true.” He replied, as he walked to the receptionist’s desk to sign.
“You came early today.”

Silence reigned between them as Marv was absent-minded again.

“I said you came early today.” The receptionist said again.
“Oh! Yes. I left home earlier.”
“Ok. That’s a good one.”
“Thank you.”
“The Manager said you should see him in his office once when you come in.”
“Oh! Really?”
“Yes.”
“Please, what’s today’s date?”
“Hmmmmm…28.”
“Oh! I see. Thank you. I will see him shortly.” Marv said.

He knew why the Manager wanted to see him, and he was certain his retrenchment letter was typed already. In fact, he imagined his name on the letterhead, and the likely content of the letter. It was 28th of the month, and the company’s month ends on the 27th. So, Marv knew his grace period had come to an end.

“I don’t need to see the Manager for my sack letter. I’ll rather leave now.” He said to himself, as he went to his desk to pack his things.

==============================================================

“Why did you tell him?” Ify asked her friend, as they both passed through their hostel’s walkway, leading to the waiting room.

It was a two-storied building outside the campus with about 16 different bedsitter apartments. The hostel was well-built with a good parking space and a small waiting room on the ground floor.

“I am so sorry Ify. I was only trying to help you.” Ebere pleaded.
“Help me? How would you have helped me that way?”
“I thought…”
“You thought what? Ehn! You thought what Ebere?” She asked as they approached their room.
“Please open the door, and let me go in.” Ify commanded her friend.
“I didn’t go out with my key.” Ebere replied with apology written all over her face for not going with her key, for what she told Ify she did, and for what she did few hours ago without telling her friend. Ify reached for the key in her bag and opened the door. Ebere followed immediately, still full of apologies.

“See, there is nothing you would say that would make me forgive you for this. You should not have done that at all.” Ify reassured her friend about how hurt she was, as she threw herself on the bed to rest.
“I know I deserve whatever you say to me. My major concern now is, how do we revert what Prof. Alex did to you?”
“I have no idea.”
“Why not go home to tell your parents about it. They would know what to do.”
“My parents? That’s not an option. They would kill me.”
“And which is better? Your parents killing you or that evil man killing you for rituals?”
“You are right though. I guess I’ll just have to go home next week.”
“Next week? Why not tomorrow? Why do you have to wait till next week?” Ebere asked, with huge urgency in her voice. A mild knock was heard on their door, but they didn’t really pay much attention to it.
“Ify, please, go home tomorrow. I don’t even mind going with you, if that would help.” Ebere added. The mild knock was heard again, this time, a little louder.
“Come in!” Ify shouted, not minding who was at the door.

As the door opened, two figures that breed fear and terror walked into the room. Their faces were masked, and their dressing didn’t spell gentle at all.
“Your attention is needed somewhere.” One of them said, pointing to Ify.
“And, if you try anything funny, your parents would cry at your grave.” The other said, bringing out a gun.
