Personally, I prefer boarding bike to anywhere I'm going because it is faster than taxis (that could get caught up in a serious traffic). Anytime I board a bike, it is always a time for me to either learn from the bikeman or share from my little archive of knowledge. I get to ask the bikemen questions as I also get to answer questions as well. This morning was not an exception, as I and the bikeman started our conversation with the recent hoodlum fight somewhere in the city. The fight actually led to the death of one and many others were seriously injured. "It was even beside the king's palace, and they couldn't even respect the king" The bikeman said in Yoruba. I didn't know where the response I gave the bikeman came from, but I was shocked myself at what I said. "They have not respected the Heavenly King, how much more an Earthly king" I replied in Yoruba language too, and that was it. We both found ourselves thinking and ruminating over that expression.
It is actually the solemn truth that many of us find it hard to respect authorities around us. We disobey our parents, our elders, our teachers/lecturers, to name but few. We even go to the extent of disrespecting them and having little or no regard for their age and experience over us. We believe we know more than they do, simply because we know more about the present technological gadgets than them. We forget that a young child can have more clothes than an elder, but can't have more rags than him. The reason for this great level of disobedience and disrespect is not far fetched at all. It is simply because we don't respect God Almighty - the King of kings. We just live our lives with little or no regard for God above, and that is why we find it hard to respect "little" authorities placed above us.
The genesis of our lack of respect for God can be traced down to the fact that we don't know Him. Imagine, if a soldier slaps you, will you retaliate? We all know the answer. Also, if the President of America invites you to the White House, will you think twice before you go? We know the answer to that too. That is because we know these people well enough, and we know what they can do. It's because we don't know God, that is why we don't respect Him, and it is when we respect and fear God that we would do the right thing even when nobody is watching us (because we know He is watching us). That is when you will not forge that signature just to get approval. You will not upgrade/downgrade your age just to get a job. You will not change the figures of the money that came in at your place of work. You will not embezzle public funds just because you can. You will not sit on someone's file just because of your negligence. You will simply do the right tthing without anybody telling you. So, I charge us today to strive to know more about God, and also do the right thing.
SEE YOU AT THE TOP!!!
