A PHONE CALL (Episode 5)

The call ended earlier than Dami expected. As silence took over the other end of the phone, she knew better that The One has ended the call again, just as it was his usual practice after saying or giving an unbelievable instruction. She looked at her phone to be sure that the call was truly over, and indeed, The One was gone, leaving behind only the timer that showed the duration of their conversation. Dami understood the instructions perfectly, only that she could not fathom how she would go about it. Aside her several physically-unknown friends, her Facebook account also had people from her place of work, students from the school where she taught some years back, not leaving out her church members, where she was a very active Usher among the congregation. She picked up her phone to open her Facebook account, and that was when a text came in. "Hey Dami, I can't go for the programme anymore. I'm having a serious stomachache. –Kiki" The text read. It was Dami's friend who they both had the intention of going for a programme later that evening. Dami could not say anything aside silently saying to herself, "Me too." She couldn't go for the programme too, even if Kiki was willing and ready to go. She had more important things to attend to.

The One's demand made her understand that he was truly out to get a good hold on her, and to punish her, just as he rightly said. "But, what if I told him my main secrets, would he have demanded I post them on Facebook too?" Dami wondered. "Who does that?" She asked herself. "Who posts her top secrets on the social media where men would use them as object of ridicule?" She asked herself again. But then, she remembered her twins who are in danger at that time. Tears flowed down her eyes like a rivulet, and she couldn't help but do The One's bidding. "What's on your mind?" Facebook asked her as she started typing. She felt like letting Facebook know that what she was about to post was not what she had in mind. She felt she could strike a deal with Facebook, to help her keep her secrets from those who would use it against her. As she typed the first secret she told The One, the whole memory of the event rushed down her memory. She went shopping that very day she lied that she was robbed. Her plan was to get some groceries for the family before heading down to the children's school to pay their school fees for the term. She was almost out of the mall when she saw a beautiful necklace displayed in the last shop in the mall. "Wow… that is a very beautiful necklace." She exclamated. A part of her told her to forget the necklace and go her way, while the other part told her to stop by to take a closer look. "A look would not kill." She convinced herself. She followed the latter, and by the time she was leaving the shop, the attendants waved and appreciated her, as the gold necklace was well-packed in the shop's customized nylon after she parted ways with #45,000 out of the children's school fees. It was while in the car she cooked up the lie that she was robbed. As she typed the second secret, her hands trembled, and she kept looking at her back to be sure nobody was spying on her, even though she knew she was the only one left in the house. She didn't plan having an affair with Uncle T in the first place. Uncle T was a very good neighbour who helped her out with one or two things anytime her husband travelled. He was a young bachelor who lived opposite them. His name was actually Tade, but the twins called him, "Uncle T", and so, she was fond of calling him that too. The first time she had an affair with Uncle T was when the kids travelled to her parent's house for mid-term break, and Jude suddenly texted her that he was going on a 2-day business trip. She was so bored that evening that she sat at their veranda. Uncle T was just returning from work when she greeted him. He moved closer to her. "where are my children?" Uncle T asked. "They went for holiday" She replied. Along the line, their conversation led to Uncle T accusing her that she had never visited him before. She felt guilty, and decided to visit him that evening. "Afterall, I'm not doing anything." She thought. He served her wine, which she drank and got so tipsy that she began to misbehave, and eventually begged Uncle T to have sex with her. Uncle T acted innocent at first, but by the time she left his house the following morning, she had already compromised her marriage vows, and had already disgraced womanhood. She cried her eyes out, and Uncle T also apologized to her. She requested they keep it a secret, which Uncle T approved of, and it remained a secret until when The One requested that she make it public. "No, I can't do this. If my husband finds out, it would ruin everything." She told herself, as she wiped off all she had typed. "I can't afford to loose my marriage." She told herself again. "I will have to beg him to allow me give him any amount of money he wants" She decided, as she closed the browser. She called The One's number, but was not reachable as usual. After some minutes, The One called. "So, you chose to dare me?" He asked, without saying the usual "hello" we say to start almost all phone conversations. It was 10 minutes past the deadline The One gave her. "No. It's not like that. I was thinking..." Dami tried to explain before she was interrupted. "So, you want to dare me?" The One asked again, with a harsher tone. "You will hear from me soon." The one said as he ended the call as usual.
