Fortress Publishers was one of the leading publishing firms in the country, and it's publications and quality, superceeds many of its counterparts. They were known for various books, ranging from educational, inspirational, and down to literary. Their offices were located in different parts of the country, while their headquarters was located in the heart of Lagos. Of all their branches, the most excelling branch was the one located somewhere in the city of Ibadan. This branch was known for always meeting its monthly target, and sometimes, it even over-shoot the target. Excelling Branch, they called it, and indeed, it excelled. Excelling Branch was headed by Mr. Akande whose big belly was enough to be an identity card. He was a very hardworking man, and would never take NO for an answer. He was always on his marketers' neck, and he encouraged them regularly from his own personal purse. Although, Akande's salary was way below the commitment and efforts poured into the job, but, he wasn't bothered for once. He loved his job, and did it wholeheartedly. "Yes. We can." That was another name his co-workers called him. At every meeting and gathering, he would say "Yes. We can" more often than his entire speech. With that, he was named, "Yes. We can". Mere looking at Akande, one can not accurately guess his age, as his pot belly and chubby face would interfere with one's judgement. In his early 30s, one would mistake Akande to be close to his 40s. He resumed early, and closed late. Even at times, he would take some files home against his wife's approval. Ella, his wife, was always on the lookout for files whenever Akande comes back home late. She knew so well he would try to hide a file or two in his bag. "It's urgent" "it's an emergency" "it is this, it is that" Akande would try to explain to his not-ready-to-accept wife. She would listen quietly to his explanation and when he is through, she would collect the bag from him, give him kiss, and that would be the last Akande would see the bag for the night. One particular night, Akande woke up and tip-toed to the sitting room trying to locate where Ella kept his bag. He searched and searched but didn't see it. The following morning he found it beside the kitchen cabinet. The next time his bag was ceased, he patiently waited for the night to come, and then headed for the kitchen, but the bag was not in anyway close to the kitchen.
As peaceful as Akande's house was, as loving as his wife was, as hardworking and zealous as Akande was, he had a flaw and a weakness. He hardly took his eyes away from anything under the skirt. He would do everything to woo any beautiful lady he came across. As for his female workers, one can boldly say that Akande had had an affair with all of them, especially the ones who came in after he became the branch manager. He got many of them during the interview session by promising them the very job they want, or even a higher position. Those who were gullible enough fell for his promises, while the smart one flee from him. But, after sampling the gullible ones, he would eventually pick the most qualified candidate. He was on this practice for some years, and all those years, Akande had a price to pay for his actions, even his innocent wife paid too.
