HIGHWAY TO HELL (Episode 6)

SOONER than later, Akin's family didn't take the death of their beloved son easy at all. They had reported the case to the police, and the police in their usual manner had set up an investigating committee to find the murderer. Detective Maye was the head of that committee, and he was known to always get to the root of issues like this. "Smith, please kindly keep to your promise." Chief had told his D.P.O friend whose station was to handle the investigation. "No problem. A disgrace to you is a disgrace to me." The D.P.O assured Chief. Detective Maye had visited Akin's office to question the workers there, and it was during the questioning that he discovered that Akin and Mr. Hassan were both rivals. "How close were you to the late Mr. Akin?" The detective asked Mr. Hassan when he visited his office. "We were not that close, neither were we that far from each other." Mr. Hassan replied. "As you can see, his office is just next to mine." He added. The detective continued with some other chitchat when all of a sudden, his face saw the empty bottle of fruit wine Mr. Hassan shared with Akin. "That fruit wine must be a good one." Detective Maye said, using his head to point to the bottle. "Oh!  Yes it's very nice." Mr. Hassan replied. "A friend of mine bought it for me  last week." He added again. Detective Maye moved closer to examine the bottle. He turned the bottle as if trying to pour some little drop on his palm. "But, this looks like the exact wine Mr. Akin was drinking in his office before he was rushed to the hospital." Detective Maye asked. "Oh! I almost forgot to tell you." Mr. Hassan said. "We both shared this wine that very morning before the incident." He continued. "Shared a wine?  Early in the morning? " Detective Maye asked. "The truth is, I and Mr. Akin were both contenders for the managerial post." Mr. Hassan started. "Contenders or rivals?" Detective Maye cuts in. "No. We were not rivals. Just that we were never on the same page on some issues." Mr. Hassan explained. "On some issues or on most issues?" Detective Maye cuts again. At that point, Mr. Hassan was short of words, he didn't know what to say anymore. "Detective, if you are looking for the culprit that killed Mr. Akin, my office is not the right place." Mr. Hassan eventually said. Detective Maye pretended he didn't hear that, and then said, "congratulations on your new position as the Manager." Mr. Hassan was shocked. He wondered how the detective got to know of the new post. "It is not even official yet. How then did he know? " He wondered within himself. But, Detective Maye interrupted his thought when he asked,  "So, why did you both share a bottle of wine that day? ". "I wanted to make peace with him." Mr. Hassan replied. "Hmmmmmm...... " Detective Maye sighed. "People said they saw you walk out of Mr. Akin's office with a cup full of wine, but that you returned few minutes later with just an empty cup." Detective Maye said, in a rather questioning manner. "Yes. We both wanted to share the wine, and I was about drinking mine when GM called me. So, I rushed out to his office." Mr. Hassan explained. "But, the GM said he didn't come to the office until noon that day." Detective Maye fired back. "Yes. When he called my number, I didn't pick it, because I thought he was around, I simply rushed to his office. Then, his secretary told me he was not around yet." Mr. Hassan explained. "So, were you walking round the corridor with a cup of wine early in the morning? Detective Maye questioned again. "No. I dropped it in my office before going to the GM's office, and I drank it immediately I came back from GM's office, before going back to Mr. Akin's office." Mr. Hassan said. "Where did you drink the wine." Detective asked. "Here in my office." Mr. Hassan replied slowly. "What then happened to the rest of the wine in the bottle?" Detective Maye asked. "Well, after taking it from Mr. Akin, I didn't feel like taking it anymore, so, I poured the rest away... " Mr. Hassan tried to explain. "Hmmmmmm....... " Detective Maye interrupted, as he wrote somethings on his note. Silence took over the office for about a minute before Detective Maye broke the silence. "Would you have killed him if you knew you would eventually get the position?" Mr. Hassan was shocked by that question. "What! How do you mean? " Mr. Hassan demanded. Detective Maye did not reply him. Instead, he picked his phone and made a call. "You can come upstairs now... "
