SHADOWS OF LOVE (Episode 7)

Chief Arowolo could not withstand the whole thing about her daughter's accusation. He went straight to Agbegbemi's house. He met him eating an Egusi soup which was well ganished with bush meat. Agbegbemi had a morsel of Amala in his hands when Chief Arowolo came in. On seeing him, he signaled to the lady in his house to get him a stool for Chief Arowolo. The lady looked at Chief Arowolo like a rival, and Chief Arowolo himself could clearly see that Agbegbemi was a flirt. "Agbegbemi, was that our plan?" Chief Arowolo asked after sitting on the stool he was offered. Agbegbemi took his time to pour himself palmwine from a wine gourd. "What did you say?" He asked after emptying a cup full of palmwine. "Did you hear that my daughter has been arrested?" Chief Arowolo asked again. "Yes. I heard. But, in what way is that my business?" Agbegbemi asked. Chief Arowolo was dumb-founded. He could not believe his ears. "Yes. We agreed to kill Ayandele, but was I the one who told your daughter to visit him?" Agbegbemi said again, after a brief pause. "I played my part by ensuring that Baba gave him a deadly herb instead of the cure for his injury, and your own part was to ensure that your daughter does not visit him at all." Agbegbemi finally added. Chief Arowolo knew he was truly at fault. He was supposed to ensure that his daughter doesn't leave the house that very day. "But, even if I made a mistake, is that why Agbegbemi should feel unconcerned about my daughter's arrest." Chief Arowolo asked himself. "And the worst of it all is that Agbegbemi has brought in another lady into his house." He said to himself again as he shook his head in regret. "Agbegbemi, thank you so much for everything." He said as he stood up to leave.

The trial was to take place at the market square, and the big tree that served as the people's court of justice was already surrounded by villagers of different age-groups and gender. Some came with stools from their homes, while some others took to standing. But, nobody wanted to be left out of the session, not even the little children there. The big Iroko tree, which served as the people's shrine was decorated with palm-fronds, and pieces of red clothe was also tied round the tree, in front of the tree was a big wood which has the shape of "Y" where the victims to be sacrificed would put their neck, before the beheader would separate the head from the body. The last time the people gathered round the tree was 3 moonlights ago when Akebaje was beheaded for raping Amoke beside the stream early in the morning. He had committed the crime without denying, neither did he feel remorseful for his actions. His reason for committing the crime was simply because Amoke refused to accept his advances. When his head was eventually cut off from his body, his neck gushed out blood as if it has been in a hurry to leave its abode. "Good people of Kijipa village" The Baale started. Awelewa was at one side of the scene, while her father was sitting close to her too. Mama Risika gave her part of the story, as if she was there when Awelewa killed Ayandele. When it was Awelewa's turn to give her own version of the story, her tears did not allow her to say anything sensible, and this made the Baale cut her short. Then, the Baale rose up to give his verdict. "From all that has been said..."

What do you think would eventually happen? Do you think Awelewa's head would be beheaded? How do you think Chief Awolowo intend to pay Agbegbemi back for his betrayal? Well, let's forget all the questions. Tomorrow is the last day. So, let's meet again tomorrow as we conclude the story SHADOWS OF LOVE.
