THREE IS A CROWD (Episode 5)

Read up past episodes or/and other great stories on my blog at www.tyobstacle.blogspot.com

As the reunion reached its climax, Amope kicked the thought of telling the boys the bitter truth from her heart. The thought fought tirelessly to remain in her heart, and the battle was tough for both Amope and the thought itself. Jenny was sitting right beside Peter, while Paul sat beside Amope. The memories of what she did before she conceived never left her at all. They were always within reach for her all the years. She knew she had a lot to tell the boys. Aside the secret surrounding their birth, she knew she also had to tell them about Paulina. Amope and her husband decided to tell Peter and Paul that they were twins. They never made them, for once, know that they were triplet. They destroyed all the pictures where Paulina was, in order to avoid any suspicion later in the future. Although, it was Akorede's idea not to tell the boys about Paulina until they were mature enough to handle the death of their sister who never lived up to a year. But, when the boys were of age enough, Akorede had travelled to the great beyond, leaving the secret to Amope to divulge. For so many years, Amope could not handle telling the boys about their sister. But, at the reunion, she was ready to let the secrets out, especially that of Paulina. "Peter!" She called. "Yes mummy!" He answered with a heavy smile on his face. Paul just cracked a joke that made them all laugh, except Amope because she was lost in thought. Peter's laughter was so innocent and real, and Amope kicked against the idea of revealing the secrets, if not for any reason, but to preserve the laughter on the boys' lips. "Mummy, you called me" Peter said, tempting Amope. "Don't worry." She said as casual as possible. At a point, Amope left the boys to get some fresh air outside. As she sat on a wooden chair at the balcony of the house, the thoughts of telling the boys the whole secret crossed her mind again, and she remembered Baba's warning concerning the consequence of not doing exactly as she was told.

It was Lade, Amope's friend that introduced Amope to Baba. "There is nothing he cannot do" Lade said, boldly. Lade had always told Amope about Baba, but she was bent on waiting for God's time, instead of using fetish means to get a child. But, that very day, was the day her Mother-in-law threatened to evict her out of the house. Infact, she brought a young girl for Akorede. "This is my son's wife that would give him the children I would carry." Mama said, scornfully enough. Amope could not say a word, instead, she ran to Lade's house, and that evening, they were both at Baba's shrine. Amope was then determined and ready to get a child by all means. "Give me your palm" Baba said, after Lade explained their reason for coming. Amope stretched her right palm to Baba. "No. Your left palm" Lade quickly whispered into Amope's right ear. Baba said some incantations on Amope's left palm, and nodded as he said different things. Amope was so eager to know what was making the old man nod his head which was filled with grey hair and beards. "Lade, se ore e ma gbo oto oro? (will your friend hear the truth?)" Baba asked. Amope and Lade nodded almost at the same time. "Ni ko se suru (tell her to be patient)" Baba told Lade, as if Amope was absent. Amope gave Lade an I-told-you look. But, Lade was used to Baba, and she knew how to go about issues like that. "Baba, ireti pipe ma n sokan lare (absence makes the heart grow fonder)" Lade said. "Baba, there should be something you can do about it?" Lade asked. "I've already told her that there is nothing you can't do" Lade added, indirectly challenging Baba. Baba did not like to be challenged, and because because of what Lade said, he had to do something about Amope's issue. Baba told them to go, and he told Amope to come back alone the following day. Amope did not miss her way to Baba's shrine the following day, and Baba also did not keep her waiting at all. Baba gave her a calabash, and told her how to apply the content of the calabash. He told her to come back to him immediately she observes that she is pregnant. "pa da wa ooooo (come back oooo)" Baba advised. "O se pataki ooo (it is very important oooo)" Baba warned.

Amope was lost in thoughts of her adventure at Baba's shrine when a shrill cry from the house woke her up from her reverie. The shout was so loud and so severe. Amope ran inside the house, and to her greatest surprise, Jenny and Peter were rolling on the floor. The very way she rolled on the floor when she testified about God's goodness in the church after she gave birth to the triplet. But, the difference was that, Amope rolled on the floor out of excitement. But, Jenny and Peter rolled on the floor due to pains. Paul was beside Peter, trying to give him water solution. "what could be happening?" Amope asked herself, amidst the commotion. "It's not supposed to happen now." She said to herself as she joined Paul to give them the water solution.
