Amope in her usual nature would check the babies' cot anytime she wakes up in the morning, even times she was awake all through the night due to their cries, she would still always check their cot at regular interval. How what happened passed her watchful eyes, she could not explain. Of the three babies, Paulina was her favourite, and she spent more time with her than she spent with Peter and Paul. But, how a sinister event happened to one of her babies without she knowing was a mystery to her. As she approached Paulina's cot, she noticed a high level of silence. At first, her mind was at peace because it meant Paulina was sleeping quietly. She would have loved to carry her and sing her a lullaby or two. She was her favourite, and she deserved more lullaby than the boys. Amope's mind travelled to the inequality of attention she was giving to her little babies. "But, she is a girl na" Amope tried to solicit for Paulina. She felt like carrying Paulina, but she knew the danger involved. In the process of trying to carry Paulina, she might wake up, and start cry, which inturn will wake the boys up. "Let me allow her to sleep." She said to herself with a high level of satisfaction and achievement. Amope had taken only three steps when she revisited her decision about carrying Paulina. "I don't even have anything to do for now" She tried to convince herself, ignoring the breakfast she would prepare, and some other things she would have to do. As she moved closer to Paulina's cot, she again thought against waking up the little girl. It was at that point she got so convinced that aside her reason for wanting to carry Paulina, there was more to why her heart wanted her to carry her. As she stretched out her hands, her left hand was the first to touch Paulina, and she felt a high degree of coldness. Paulina was cold. Very cold, and lifeless. "Paulina!" She called softly, as if the 4 months old baby was old enough to know her name, and respond to it whenever she is called. "Paulina! Paulina!!" She called again, this time, a little more pronounced. She turned the baby's back, and used her left index finger to spank her buttocks, as if Paulina has done something worthy of being punished. But, if at all Paulina had done something wrong, the poor little girl was not ready to respond to anything, not even the spanking on her buttocks as they increased. Amope threw her up severally, and as she caught her in the air, she let out a shrill cry. A cry loud enough to wake her mother-in-law, and neighbours. The shrill cry was also loud enough to alert Akorede in his study room, and he rushed down to where Amope was. Amope was already crying, while her mother-in-law continued more elderly attempts to wake up the little child. As if they knew what happened, Peter and Paul were seriously crying in their own cot, and Amope gave them no attention. Two of her neighbours carried Peter and Paul, and the little boys held tight to the clothes of their carriers, as if begging them to save them from the ranging hands of death that just took their sister. The tighter they held, the more they cried. The more they cried, the more Amope cried, and for a moment, one would think a crying competition was going on in the room. As Amope cried, she said all sort, ranging from abuses to curses.

What could have lead to the death of Paulina? Or, let me put it this way, who killed the poor innocent young girl? Well, the answers to those questions are yet to unfold.
