One month down the line, you thought the car would stop trailing you. But, it didn't. It only reduced the way it followed you, to few hours a day. There was a time Powa himself came around, and you knew the best you could do for yourself at that time was to increase your "madness". You picked one of the numerous bottles tied round your waist, and became to feed and rock it to sleep like a baby. The very way one of the madmen at the hospital rocked the pillow. You knew that was your chance of proving to Powa you were really mad, and you gave your best display of madness. After few minutes, the car zoomed off, only to re-appear the following day. With that, you knew Powa was not ready to give up so easily.
Two months passed slowly like a beauty queen at a peagentry. But still, Powa did not relent. You thought of running away from the town, but you kicked against the idea almost immediately because you knew Powa would track you down in a matter of time, and that would only prove your guilt. In the cool of the day, one evening. One of those times the car was not "on duty". A strong full memory of the accident scene rushed back to you. Before that day, you simply gave up on trying to remember what happened to the bag of gold you had with you after the accident, before you went back to the car for Christy, because the memories hurt your head greatly anytime you tried to remember it. But that evening, it came to you on its own accord, without hurting your head at all. The memories looked fresh and unploughed. Before you went back for Christy, you dug a small pit, which was big enough to accommodate the bag. You buried the bag, and then went back for Christy. "Why didn't I remember this all this while?" You questioned yourself, as if you deserve to be punished. You didn't even bother finding answers to your questions. Instead, you stormed out and headed for the accident scene. You have ran about 50 metres before you remembered that you were "mad". You stopped abruptly to look around if anybody have noticed your "un-madness", especially the car trailing you. Lucky for you, the car was nowhere to be found. You let out a smile and a heavy laughter in order to clear all suspicion the passers-by might have about your madness. Aside Powa knowing you were not mad, you knew what it meant if people found out too. They would simply take you for a ritualist who disguised as a madman just to kidnap people, and nothing else but jungle justice would be your fate. You displayed few madness before you continued your journey to the accident scene. You knew you had to hurry to and fro, before the car comes around, without finding you in your usual spot.
The accident scene hasn't changed much, except for the car that was no longer there, as well as Christy's body. You didn't expect to see any of those there anyway. Two months was a long time. But, the memories were still fresh in your head. You tried to locate the spot where you dug, and then it crossed your mind that Powa might have found it already. "But, if he has found it, why would he still be trailing me?" You asked yourself, as the answer was not far-fetched from you. You started digging a spot, and after digging for a while, you found nothing. You moved to another spot, unsure of the exact spot. After about five attempts at digging different spots, you struck gold. The bag was still intact, just as the golds in it. The thought of running away crossed your mind again, but you erased it immediately. Your final decision was simple. To bury the gold again, and continue with your madness until Powa gives up on you.
If you had a calendar, you would know that the day a man gave you a hundred Naira note made it exactly 6 months you started your madness journey, and the next day would mark a whole month the car stopped coming. You were very surprised the first day the car did not show up. But, you felt it would show up the following day. But, it didn't. After about two weeks of not seeing the car or any sign of being watched by Powa or his men, you concluded that Powa has given up, and you decided to plan your escape. Your plan was simple, to go back to where you buried the bag, and escape with it. So it was when you displayed your madness towards the accident scene. You unburied the bag, and as you walked out of the ditch, you saw the unexpected.
