THE VIRGIN PROSTITUTE (Episode 7)

:::::LADE::::::

I really didn't know why Chike wanted us to change our initial plan of going to the cemetery early enough, but with all my pleading and argument on why we should go early, he refused and insisted we go around 12 am, as against 9pm that we agreed on, the first time. For me, the earlier we go, the better I can deal with those scary things that might be there at the cemetery. Not only that, I also heard that ghosts are always awake in the middle of the night and that they even hold meetings in the cemetery. These and other reasons were why I insisted we go early, because I was sure the ghosts would not for any reason entertain visitors during their meeting, especially visitors that have come to vandalize and steal from one of them. As he drank the third bottle of beer in the beer parlour where we sat, I tried to plead with him that we go on time, but he kept telling me not to worry, and he encouraged me to take more alcohol that it would help drive away fear. Gradually, the beer parlour became empty as people dialogued with their legs one after the other. At 11:30pm, Chike signaled to the madam to come for her money. "Na how much be my money?" He asked. "3,250" The woman replied, handing a piece of paper to Chike. "OK. Give me a pack of ciga" He ordered. I was very shocked that Chike ordered for a pack of cigarettes. Although, I know him to be a heavy drinker. But, when it comes to cigarette, Chike does not smoke. "Ghosts don't like the smoke from cigarette." Chike leaned towards me to whisper that to my left ear. "You should get one too." He added. "No." I struggled to reply him, as my heart started racing faster than normal. "Ghosts?" I asked myself again. In no time, the woman was back with the pack of cigarettes, and Chike paid the woman. He carried his bag, and signaled to me to get up. In his bag were the minor items we needed for the job, while he had gone earlier in the day to keep the shovel, digger and other heavy tools somewhere at the cemetery.

The road to the cemetery was dark and quiet, and only the toads and crickets ruled the night. In no time, we got to the cemetery which the gate was thrown wide open. "What about the security men in charge of this place?" I asked Chike. He smiled like a child who just got a new toy from his parents. "I have settled them. They will not be coming to work until 3am." Chike replied. I was marveled. I could not help but wonder how perfectly Chike had planned the whole thing. "How many times has he done something like this?" I asked myself. It was then it crossed my mind that I don't even know how long the whole thing would take. "Like how long will it take?" I asked him. "The digging or the stealing?" Chike replied, making a mockery of my question. I didn't say a word in response. "It should not take more than 3 hours." He replied after a while. The air in the cemetery was totally different from the air I was familiar with. It was cold and very thick. I could hear series of strange sounds, or maybe it was my mind that was playing tricks on me. "We never reach there?" I was forced to ask Chike after walking about 100 metres into the cemetery. "E remain small." Chike replied, without even looking back. I kept following him like a child enticed with biscuit or candy. In a matter of minutes, we got to the grave, but what we saw was not what we expected at all. Chike was the first to shout out of awe and surprise. I didn't really understand why he shouted at first until he pointed to it. It was the grave we wanted to dig. The grave had opened up. Not by itself, but by men. The coffin was somewhere beside the sand dug out of the grave, and it was very obvious that some people had beaten us to the place. Chike kept lamenting and yelling. I knew it hurt him so much that it has all turned into a wasted journey. I tried consoling him, eventhough I didn't know why I consoled him. But, he shouted at me, and told me leave him alone. I was extremely shocked and perplexed when Chike brought out a gun from his bag and pointed it towards me. "Lade, why did you betray me?" He asked, with a cigarette in his mouth, and his right index on the trigger ready to shoot.
