BLOOD OF A HE-GOAT (Episode 9)

Akande himself could not say for sure what was happening to him. He felt a great level of guilt after he shouted at Ella on the condom issue. It was a great over-sight on his part because he was supposed to dispose the condom after use. But, how he forgot to even keep it in his drawer at the office was what baffled him. That was not the very first time he would use a condom for any of his catch, eventhough, most of the time he doesn't use a condom. But that very day, it all happened so fast that even him could not believe his eyes. It was way past closing time, but he decided to stay behind to finish up some office files.  He was so engrossed in the document he was cross-checking when the intercom rang. Akande was surprised at first. "who could still be around at this time?" He asked himself before reaching for the phone without even lifting up his head from the documents. "security?" He asked. "What did she say her name is?" He questioned the voice from the other end. "Oh! Let her in." He said with a big smile on his face. Nkechi was the least person Akande expected to be his prey. The girl had rejected out rightly when Akande called her aside after their interview. "I will be here till 9pm in case you change your mind" Akande told her before she angrily left his office that morning. Nkechi was one of the cases of unemployment in a country where nothing works. Just as many of her mates, she had graduated for the past 3 years, and was not able to get a good job that was sufficient enough to take care of even her basic needs. As a graduate, the best job offer she got was a #20,000 job, where she would have to pay #200 daily for transportation, and the working hours were extremely killing. She decided to do Mr. Akande's bidding without letting anybody know. "afterall, nobody knows how everybody got their jobs" She thought. Akande met Nkechi with a very big smile when she entered his office. "What can I offer you?" He asked, still smiling. Nkechi did not say a word. In no time, Akande received his payment, and did not stop smiling like a jackass. "When will I get my appointment letter?" Nkechi asked, with tears betraying her red eyes. "Don't worry. Tommorow. Yes. Tomorrow" Akande said, still smiling. He was so carried away with excitement that he put the condoms in his pockets in place of his handkerchiefs.

As his mind reflected back to all the immoral acts he had committed, and how loving his wife was to him, he could not help but shed tears. He hated himself for all he has done, and he wished he could turn back the hands of time. "How did I even get to this point in my life?" He asked himself. "I have a very beautiful, caring and loving wife. What else do I want?"  He queried himself.  At that point, he was certain that he needed to retrace his steps. If not for anything, atleast, for the sake of his wife who was not able to give birth to a child for him. "Only God knows how lonely she would have been all this while." He thought. He got up and walked to the sitting room where he left his wife after she questioned him about the condoms. When he got to the sitting room, he found his wife perfectly folded on the smallest chair in the sitting room, muttering words and crying bitterly. "Ella !" He called. But, the guilt in him didn't make his voice loud enough. "Ella !" He called again. This time, louder. Ella turned her head to see who was calling. "I'm very sorry" He struggled to say as tears tried to betray him. He apologized for his actions, and behaviours. " I have come back to my senses." He said. All the while, Ella was staring at him like a Plasma television which was displaying a very strange image she couldn't figure out. The more she stared at him, the more tears rolled down her eyes like showers of rain, and the more she cried, the more Akande apologized. Akande pulled her closer, and hugged her, but she kept crying. To her, it was all a movie she was watching on a plasma television. A movie she would like to keep watching. A movie she would like to take part in. A movie she found hard to believe was real. But, the more Akande hugged her, the more reality dawned on her, and the more she cried. All of a sudden, Akande released her and stood on his own. "I knew it was all a movie" Ella thought. Akande stood, looking like a lost chicken. "my eyes are turning" Akande said, trying to locate the nearest chair. Before he could locate a chair, and before Ella could help him sit on the nearest chair, Akande had fallen flat on the ground. "Akande ! Akande!! Akande !!!" Ella shouted.
