Blood is not only thicker than water, it also flows slower than water. The loud bang I heard penetrated right into my ears, and it was loud enough to over-write the current song on my playlist which I was listening to with my long white handsfree. The major bang was louder than the other minor bangs that followed it, and the last thing I remembered was my entire body thrusting forward to hit the bus' windscreen. I didn't like sitting at the front of a bus when I travel. I prefer to sit close to the door or better still, close to any of the windows. But, when I boarded that bus, I was so much in a hurry, and the only available seat was the one beside the driver. I had the choice of waiting till the next bus gets filled or to take the seat, and meet up with the business appointment I was going for in Ibadan. I took the seat, and paid without delay, except for the driver who took more time than necessary sorting out the "Agberos". "Oga driver, abeg make we dey go." One old Igbo man shouted from the back. Soon enough, the driver came, and we started the journey. "I'll visit grandma after my meeting before returning to Lagos." I told myself. So many thoughts filled my heart as I tried to filter the best thing to do at every point in time. Immediately after the loud bang, I felt a very brief painful pain in my head, and that was it. The next thing I knew was that I saw myself standing at the other end of the road, and people were running and rushing to the accident scene. I didn't understand what was happening at all. Our 18-seaters bus was already flat on the ground with its left side, and blood was flowing out gradually from the bus. The blood was red and fresh, as some of the passengers were trying to get out from the other side of the window. The lady who was sitting close to the right side of the car was calling for help. Her Brazilian weave-on was already stained with her own blood, and her handbag had a few drops of her blood as well. I didn't know how I got to the other side of the road, and I didn't know why I couldn't feel any pain. I decided to move closer to the scene, and people around the vicinity were already trying to help those that were still alive out of the bus, while another set of people were also trying to help the passengers in the other car which collided with our bus.
As I approached the bus, I saw two men trying to pull an old man out of the bus. The man was still alive, and was stucked between two seats. "Help !!!" The old man struggled to say amist blood and wounds. As they tried to help him out of the bus, they simply pulled the man too much that it killed him. As I moved closer to the scene, I saw that the passenger beside me was still alive as the safety belt helped to hold him tight on his seat, same with the driver. I also saw myself filled with blood from the different wounds I sustained from hitting my head on the windscreen. I simply did not use the safety belt meant to hold the waist of the middle passenger beside the driver. "Sir, why don't you use the safety belt?" I remembered the passenger's beside me soon after the bus took off. "don't worry." I replied, giving him a friendly smile. The look on his face was that of embarrassment, so I had to appreciate him. "Thank you" I said after few seconds. I didn't really believe I was dead not until my body was brought out from the bus, and was dropped with other dead bodies. Infact, if I was still doubting my death, the tears of my wife who rushed to the scene an hour after cleared all doubts.
