HIGHWAY TO HELL (Episode 4)

The night became shorter for Raimi after she had the dream. She tried all efforts to sleep, but, it was obvious that sleep had deserted her. She picked up her phone on the bedside shelf to check the time. "4:05". The clock displayed boldly, as if to inform her of the need to get up on time. She unlocked the phone to check her social media notifications. She had 3 unread messages on Whatsapp, and 2 friend requests for Facebook. She clicked on the friend requests first. One of them happened to be one of her long time secondary school Ex who had travelled outside the country immediately after their SSCE examination. "Ojo Gbadegesin". A very faint smile found its way out of her mouth as she gladly accepted the friend request. Her mind went to how the two of them had dated while in secondary school. They had both started as friends, before graduating into lovers. Her parents had allowed Ojo to visit her at will, and he visited him at will two. Their houses were just a stone throw away, and if not because Ojo had travelled, it was certain that she would have been right beside Ojo at that moment. Ojo didn't have the intention of travelling outside the country, but, one of his uncles had invited him over to America for his tertiary education. At first, Ojo declined, and it took series of combined efforts, including that of Raimi, before he accepted. Raimi knew his reason for declining such a good opportunity. It was simply because of her. The day Ojo left, everybody in Raimi's house knew she had lost a friend. Even her dog felt the pain as it found a perfect spot beside Raimi's bed, as if telling her "we are together in this." She hasn't heard from Ojo in years, and it amazed her that he remembered her. She quickly composed a message, and sent it to his Facebook inbox. "Hello OJ. It's been a while. Good to hear from you." She would have said more, but, she doesn't want to pass any message she didn't mean or start anything she can't finish. After sending the message, she got up to prepare for the new day. As she lifted her leg, she felt a slight headache. She walked to the mirror to look at her face. Her face was rough, and a part of it was swollen and red. "I have a lot of make-up to do." She told herself as she tried to examine the extent of the damage on her face.

She forced herself to the kitchen so as to prepare breakfast. She wanted to prepare for herself alone. "Akin does not deserve my food again." She said to herself. Then, a thought crossed her mind. "I think I know what to do." She said to herself, as she started boiling the rice. After boiling rice for Akin, she prepared custards for herself. By then, Aina, their house help was awake. "Madam, good morning ma" Aina said, going on her kneels. Raimi answered her by just nodding. Raimi later told the house help what she has done, and what is left to be done. "I have boiled rice for oga, and it's in his cooler." She started. "Warm the stew in the fridge, and serve him." She added. "You can eat anything you feel like eating." She finally said, as she left the kitchen. She was close to the door when she turned to warn Aina. "Make sure oga eats his food before he leaves the house oooo" She instructed. Drawing her left ear so as to drive home her point. When Akin woke up, Raimi was already gone. Aina gave him his food, and he ate in a hurry. On getting to his office, Mr. Hassan was the first to welcome him with a suprise. Mr. Hassan and Akin are two parallel lines that can never meet. They are both rivals in the company, and each of them is always looking for ways to outwit the other. Akin had not stayed up to 15 minutes in his office when Mr. Hassan walked in with a bottle of fruit wine. "I think it's high time we stopped being rivals." He said as he entered the office. After some mature conversation, the two men popped the wine, and with the help of Akin's cups they shared the wine. Akin was the first to sip his own, and as Mr. Hassan was about to drink his wine, his phone rang. He looked at it. "Na oga dey call oooo". He said, as he hurried out of the office. He later came back to return the cup, and went away with the remaining drink in the bottle. Later that evening, Akin was found in his office vomitting blood. Everybody did all they could to take him to the nearest hospital, but, before they could get to the hospital, Akin was already a ghost.

Oh!  You thought the story would end so easily? Well, I'm sorry to shock you, the story has just began. Who could have murdered Akin that way. Could it be that Oluchi has eventually killed him in the spiritual way? Or, could it be Mr. Hassan who wants him out of his way?  Or, could it even be his wife, Raimi, who wants to pay him back?  You sure would not be able to guess easily. Join me again next week Monday, as we continue the story by search and investigating the murder of Akin. The story remains, HIGHWAY TO HELL.
