SPILT MILK (The Final Saga)

Mrs. Ajileye did not think twice about what to do. For her, the choice was already boldly written on the wall. Immediately she read the text, she stood up beside Shola, and she went inside. Shola knew it was only work that could take her mother away from her at such a crucial time, and it hurt her that she even told her mother at all. She had picked up her mother's phone, and had seen the text that came in. "I shouldn't have told her. I should have known she doesn't care." Shola said to herself as tears dropped from her eyes. Now, what hurt her most was not the rape, but rather, the fact that she has nobody to run to, not even her mother. In less than 5 minutes, her mother came out with her other siblings. "Shola, let's go". Her mother said. "Is she taking us to the office or what?" Shola asked herself. But, she kept quite and dropped the blanket on the couch. "Mummy, where are we going?" Shola asked, later when they got to the car. "I'm taking you to the hospital, and I can not afford to leave your siblings at home." She replied. "But, what of your work?" Shola demanded. Her mother was surprised that Shola knew about the text, but she later remembered she had dropped her phone beside her the other time. "Well, work can wait, but my children can not." She replied. The doctor was surprised to see the whole family again, but Mrs. Ajileye explained to the doctor, and in no time, Shola was examined and tested. After several hours, the doctor came with good news.  "She is very lucky not to have contracted any STDs from the guy." The doctor said. "But, go to the drug store downstairs and get these drugs." He added. "She will be fine. There is nothing to worry about." The doctor assured. "Just ensure she sees a psychologist". The doctor recommended. As mother and daughter walked out of the doctor's office to join Kemi and Ayodele at the reception, she simply looked into her daughter's face, and said, "Shola, I am very sorry for everything". Tears was almost coming out of her eyes. In the middle of all these, her phone had been buzzing and ringing. Different people from her office had been calling her, while some have sent her text messages. But, she ignored them all. Instead, she had picked her phone to text her husband. "You have to come home as soon as possible. All is NOT well at home. " She sent to her husband with the "not" in capital letters. Her husband had joined the list of callers, but she deliberately did not pick it. "He would come home sooner if he does not know what exactly had happened." She thought.

On their way back home, they stopped at a restaurant to buy things. But this time, they sat down there to eat what they bought. Instead of their usual hurrying way of buying things at restaurants. They talked and laughed as they ate their food. Shola wished the very reunion had come the previous day. "If we have had this yesterday, it would have changed a lot of things." She thought.  On getting home, they noticed that their father was back. "See Daddy's car." Ayodele shouted, pointing to the car. He jumped out of his mother's car as he raced inside the house. Mrs. Ajileye was surprised that her husband was back. She had sent the text to him less than an hour ago. So many things ran through her mind. "Was he in town all this while?" She asked herself. She took her time in the car before going inside. She met her husband at the door. "What is wrong?" He asked almost immediately. The look on his wife's face made it clear to him that he had an explanation to make. "I was already on my way when you called me in the morning." He said with a big smile. "I wanted to surprise you all." He added. Suddenly, it seemed as if life has returned back to the Ajileye's family, as the children were happy to have their parents at home. They could hardly remember the last time such happened. Most of their Saturdays had been spent all by themselves. Kemi explained all that had happened to her husband, and he was shocked to hear them. "The fault is all ours" He confessed. He then told her how he had been feeling guilty for some days. "We have not really being good parents to the kids." He said as he shook his head. "If our own parents had brought us up this way, we would not have been where we are today." He added. "Well, I have decided to come back home and monitor only the branch here, and I have appointed a new manager in that branch over there." He said with a big smile. "If the new manager wants to cheat me, let him go ahead." He finished. "But what of your political aspirations?" Kemi inquired. "Well, I have thought of that too, and I realized that anybody that is not able to handle his own family is not fit for any political position." He said. "I have withdrawn my membership from all political groups I belong to." He said with a big sense of relief. The couples also decided that Kemi should quit her job at the bank, and take up a job in a private secondary school. "I know a friend here in town who is in need of an Account teacher." The husband said, and they both laughed as he left the room. Mrs. Ajileye picked her phone and typed,  "Me and my family have decided that I resign from the bank. I would come on Monday with my resignation letter, and I will pick my things in both my old and 'new' office. Thanks alot." She sent the message to Mr. Chinedu. By the time she finished, her husband was back to the room. "I have paid Pamilerin off, and I have told her we would not be needing her service anymore." Mr. Ajileye said. "I told her to pack her things as soon as possible, and that we would be glad to fund her education, if at all she is ready to go to school" He added. Kemi, moved closer to her husband, and gave him a kiss. "You have done well." She said. Within her, she knew she had missed her family. "I heard there is a new place in town where we can go to with the kids." Mr. Ajileye said. "Hmmm...and I know of someone kids who are dying to go out with their parents." She replied.

Hmmmmmmmm....... as an English adage says, "All is good that ends well." No doubt, the parents have learnt their lessons, and have retraced their steps. No doubt, the family has returned to what it used to be years ago. But, as a singer once said, "some broken hearts never mend. Some memories never leave. Some truths will never die... " Do you think there is any amount of love and attention that can undo what has been done to the children?  Well, the answer is all yours. Until I come your way again next week with another mind-blowing story, I remain myself, Austus Ofmat Nwanne (Mr. Tackle), and special thanks to God Almighty, the source of my inspiration.
