HIGHWAY TO HELL (Episode 1)

The very first day Akin raised his hand to beat Raimi, she could not believe her eyes. As the first slap landed on her face, she was yet to get over the shock of the slap when another punch found its way right on her right cheek. Two different punches found their way on her left shoulder, as she folded like a little child beside their green Italian couch. She used her hands to shield her head as if it's the most important asset to her. As Akin threw the punches and slaps, he accompanied them with various abusive words to describe the type of woman he had married, as if he needed a punch and a slap to drive home each of his words. Raimi  was already flat on the floor. So flat that the tall Akin's punches could not effectively pass across his words, he resorted to kicking her. He was putting on only his socks as he had earlier pulled his pointed Italian shoes before the issue started. Everything happened so fast, that Raimi could not figure out where she got it all wrong. She groaned in pains as she kept shouting to be forgiven. But, as they say, "it is not the day the devil showed himself in a house that he got into the house. He must have be moving in his things gradually." Raimi's mind could not help but wonder if the man kicking her was the exact man she married in less than a year ago. She could not fathom if he was the same man that proposed to her in what people called, "the most romantic proposal". Tears rushed down Raimi's eyes as if they just got liberated. Her tight white gown was already torn at the rare end as a result of the first push Akin gave her which landed her on the couch. The gown had not suffered much affliction unlike the person putting it on. It was still white and clean despite the fact that Raimi was now rolling on the floor. Great thanks to Raimi who had cleaned the floor earlier that day...

Akin and Raimi could be said to be the most compatible love birds during their university days. They two of them were always found in the company of each other, despite the fact that they were not in the same department and level. Akin was in his final year, while Raimi was in her second year. The two of them had met during their faculty week when Raimi contested as the Queen of the faculty, while Akin was one of the judges. Unfortunately for Raimi, she didn't win the contest, but she was the first runner-up. Akin had ceased that opportunity to approach her. "You are the most beautiful girl, just that your costume was not good enough." Akin said to Raimi who was in the mist of her friends. Raimi smiled as she shyly said, "thanks". "I hope you are not discouraged" Akin asked. "Oh! Not at all. " Raimi said. "The spirit of Olympics is not to win, but to participate. " Raimi added with a cheerful look. "Hmmmmm...... I don't think I'll agree with that." Akin replied, after thinking for a while. "Anyway, my name is Akin." He introduced himself. "Raimi is my name, and here is Oluchi, Nike... " Raimi introduced herself and her friends. "I know your name" Akin said in a mocking tone, facing Raimi. Numbers were exchanged, and soon enough, they both went on a date. After a date, they went for another, and then another and then another. From dates, they progressed into reading together, before they started visiting each other. Sooner than later, they started dating. Akin was the son of wealthy business man in town, and his monthly allowance as a student was more than some lecturers' salary. He had almost everything he wanted as a student, and one could say he was among the big boys of the school.

Raimi let out a shrill cry after which Akin stopped beating her. Her face was already red - a combination of her make up and Akin's punches. She was grateful to God that the rain of punches and kicks had ceased, eventhough she still didn't like the abusive words that were coming out of her husband's mouth. Akin moved back a little as he sat on the couch opposite the one Raimi was beaten. His eyes were fixed on her, like a predator who is ready to pounce on its prey. Raimi could not get up from the floor, not only because she was beaten, but, also because she could not believe Akin would ever raise a finger to beat her. She sobbed on the floor for some minutes, while Akin still watched her with keen interest. After some minutes, she made efforts to get up when she saw Akin sitted opposite her. "Is it because I said the truth that.... " She said. But, she had not finished the sentence when Akin got up again...

Akin has suddenly turned his wife into a punching bag. But one question I ask myself even as a man is that, is there anything a woman could do that would justify a man's reason for raising his hand to beat her? Yes. I know some women run their mouths like taps, but still, does that justify a man's reason for beating his wife?  To me, no reason whatsoever can ever justify why an ANI-man should beat a woman.
