HIGHWAY TO HELL (Episode 2)

As they say, "a Saturday that has good prospects, one would have started seeing the signs as from Friday." That was the case of Raimi who is now a punching bag in the hands of her husband. Although,  Akin has never beaten Raimi in that manner before when they were courting, but one certain thing is that,  Raimi would not say she didn't see the signs that Akin would sooner or later turn to a wife-beater. Instead, she overlooked the signs that were boldly written before her, just like many others. When they were courting, there were times when Akin threatened to beat her. Although, he eventually didn't beat her up then. But, most of those times, he resorted into giving her a very hot slap. Sometimes, the slaps could come in twos, and then followed by series of apologies and a re-assurance of his love for her. If one say that Raimi was used to receiving Akin's slap, one would not be wrong. But, what one would wonder is why she eventually said "Yes" to his proposal. The very first day he slapped her, she was shocked to her bones and marrows. The two of them had gone to an eatery that day where talked and laughed as love birds do. On their way out, Akin's eyes was fixed on a particular lady that walked past them. He looked at the lady to the extent that Raimi was so embarrassed. When they got to the car, Raimi expressed her displeasure towards such an attitude. "Akin, I don't like that. I don't." She said with all seriousness. As Raimi was talking, Akin was still looking in the direction of the lady. That made Raimi turned Akin's neck to herself, and that was what caused the whole issue. "What was that for? Do you want to break my neck?" Akin asked in a very harsh tone. Akin's questions angered Raimi the more. "Do you think I didn't know what you were doing?" She asked rhetorically. "You were admiring that girl's beauty and body." She added. "And what is wrong with that?" Akin questioned.  Raimi was shocked at the question Akin asked. She could not believe her hears. "How sure am I that you have not even been cheating on me?" Raimi asked with the hope of getting a negative response so as to re-assure herself that she had not made a wrong choice. But, she didn't get a negative response, neither did she get a positive response. What she got instead was a hot slap on her face. "How dare you call me a cheat." Akin said, after slapping her with his "extra-large" palm. Raimi's face frooze immediately, and it was after about a minute that some drop of tears dropped down her cheek. They drove home in silence, and Akin later apologized for his actions. He didn't slap her again until after about two months. But, before the second slap, which was hotter then the first, Akin was used to shouting at Raimi, and calling her names whenever they have misunderstanding, no matter how trivial the issue might be.

"Is it because I said the truth that... " She said. But, before Raimi could finish the sentence, Akin got up. He went close to her and said, "I would never allow a woman to insult me." His face was a little milder, and he seemed to have known he had over-reacted.  But, he would never apologize. Not at that moment. Raimi understood her husband better. She knew he would come back begging at night, with series of explanation and apologies. Raimi knew he would come to her part of the bed to tell her it was the devil who made him over react. He would allocate blames to anybody that comes to his mind during the apology. He would say it was his boss' fault for over-working him that day. He would say his driver was to blame for running into a bump thereby stirring up his mood. He would say his laptop contributed to it when it functioned just too slow for his liking. He would say she should have kept quite when she realized he was angry already. Raimi was sure that Akin would come back to apologize and allocate blames to everybody, and of course he did. He later crawled into the bed that night, after spending hours in his study. Raimi was still sobbing when he came in. "I'm sorry." He said in an apologetic tone. "I was already angered at work before I came in." He started with his excuses and blames. He blamed "this" and "that", he said "A" and "B" were the cause of his actions. He said alot and attributed a lot of blames. As he spoke, Raimi could not help but cry the more because it hurt her so much that her husband will not even accept the blame for beating her. She wished she had not walked down the aisle with him. She wish she had not said "I DO". She wished she had seen a day like this before hand, which would have helped her say a big NO to his proposal that very day. Everything hurts her. Everything, including his unrepentant apology, and it made her cry louder.  But, the more she cried, the more Akin allocated blames to everybody and anybody, except himself.

NB: I know the name RAIMI is a masculine name. But, I deliberately used it for a female in this story because I personally don't believe in "gender-lizing" names, and I don't see the need to do so. All genders are equal, and none is more equal than the other.

You can see the direction in which a one year old marriage is heading. But, who then is to be blamed? Raimi who thought marriage is all about love?  Or Akin who believes the that the role of a woman in the house is a silent one? My heart bleeds for many who can see the signs of the type of man/woman they are about to marry, but are still adamant to where the road would lead to. Remember, the story remains HIGHWAY TO HELL, and the next episode continues tomorrow.
