SHADOWS OF LOVE (Episode 3)

Agbegbemi could not withstand what his eyes saw. The faces of the two dancing lovers were filled with love and admiration for each other, and this provoked Agbegbemi greatly. "So, Ayandele has come to disgrace me in my father's house" He said to himself as he charged towards the lovers. As he got close to Ayandele, he suddenly lifted his two legs, and Ayandele's back could not help but hit the ground like a helpless cow who death has decided to smile upon. Before people could pull Agbegbemi away from Ayandele, he has sat on him, and had ensured that nothing less than two punches have repainted his yellow face with the touch of red. Ayandele could not understand what he could have done to be awarded in that manner after performing for free. Agbegbemi himself could not give the elders around a reasonable explaination. "Can't you see the way he was dancing with that girl?" Agbegbemi asked when he was told to explain his actions. The elders around could not understand the point Agbegbemi was trying to make. "But, we all know that Awelewa is Ayandele's lover." One of the elders said. "Which lover? Which lover?" Agbegbemi demanded. "I've told you several times that Awelewa is mine, and not even that beggar of a drummer could take her away from me." He finally added angrily.

A goldsmith's hands would naturally be stronger than that of a farmer. So also, a farmer's hands would be far stronger than that of a drummer. That explains why it took hot water, cloth and 3 days to return Ayandele's face back to what it was before Agbegbemi's punches. The punches did not hurt Ayandele, but Chief Arowolo's decision did. Chief Arowolo was one of the notable rich people in the village, and he was also Awelewa's father. He had always had a cold-like attitude towards her affair with Ayandele. "How can you bring yourself so low to love a mere drummer?" Chief Arowolo had asked some months ago when Awelewa told him about Ayandele. "Who is his father in this land." Chief Arowolo had asked again on another occassion. Among it all, Awelewa's love for Ayan did not reduce a bit. But, the incident at the burial ceremony made things worse. "How can you say you want to marry a fighter?" Chief Arowolo asked his daughter the following day. "But, father, he is not a fighter. Infact, it was Agbegbemi that punched him." Awelewa explained. "Awe, see, I might not be there, but the news got to me." Chief Arowolo said. "It is now clear that your so-called lover is jealous of Agbegbemi's wealth, and that was why he wanted to kill him." He added. Awelewa could not help but open her mouth. She wanted to explain further, but as she opened her mouth to speak, words did not come out. Chief Arowolo stood up from where he sat, "as far as I am alive, you will not marry that beggar." He said with a huge finality.

A lot of obstacles can stand in our way when some good things are coming. Our decisions and our reactions to the challenges go along way to determine what we make of our future. What do you think Awelewa would go for - her father or her lover? Join me tomorrow (Sunday) as we continue this story. Enjoy yourself.
