HOW TO CATCH A THIEF (Episode 4)

Striking a filling station is far more dangerous than striking a bank. I knew that from experience, because a filling station is open, and has little or no hidding place. So, anytime we strike a filling station, I ensure we go with enough gadgets to face any eventualities. The best time to strike a filling station is during fuel scarcity, but, it is also the most dangerous time because there would be so many cars around. It was one of those fuel scarcity days we struck a filling station. Before we left home, I had already dished out the instructions. One person stays in the car, two people stays outside, and I go inside with someone else. And, we kept that plan. As we came outside, the guys outside had already obtained all that was needed to be obtained from the fuel attendants, and myself had ensured the manager gave up all that they've sold so far. I could hear a siren from afar, so, I knew we had to leave. But, as I was about to leave, I guess I saw someone I know in a car. Our eyes met each other as he was peeping from the front seat of the car. I guess it was Wada, my senior and roommate back in our university days. It was Wada who taught me this trade when I was in my second year. He took his time to put me through the rules and regulations of the business eventhough he had just a year to graduate, and since he graduated, I never heard from him anymore. But, his lessons made me who I am today.

If you know me when I was in 100 level, you would bet with your life that I would never turn out this way. I was one of the best students in my class, and I was not ready to take a minute break from my books. My father had warned me strictly that whatever I would graduate with starts from the very first class I attend in school, and because I was keen on finishing in flying colours, I followed my father's advise. I never skipped class, I never missed any test, and I read and studied well. My first semester's result correlated with my hardwork, and I was so glad. But, two of my roommates never correlated with my plans, and they were senior students at that. Wada and Tanwa. Everybody knew they both belonged to a cult group on campus, and how I got so unlucky to find myself in that room, I never knew. Wada gave me a very tough time in my 100 level. He pleaded with me to join them, and there were times he even threatened me. But, I stood my ground. My 200 level first semester was my turning point. After one of our classes, a carry-over student came to accuse me of humilating him in the class. And what he said I did was that I answered the question he could not answer in the class. The lecturer asked him a question, and he could not answer, which made the lecturer abuse him to the fullest. After the abuse, the lecturer asked who could answer the question. The lecturer called me to answer the question, and my answer was so accurate that the lecturer used the rest of the class to do a comparison between myself and the guy. He warned me never to attend the class again, if I loved myself. And that was how it started. That was how Wada came to my rescue. That was how he brought me in. That was how he taught me the trade. After my graduation, the joblessness in the country gave me enough training opportunity to practice what I learnt. As for Wada, if not for the siren I heard from afar, I would have walked to the car to be sure he was the one, and if he was the one, I'm sure he won't deny the fact that I owe him a bullet in his head which I wohld gladly pay when next we meet. But, I had to leave, and I pray God we meet soon.
