CELL 91 (Episode 4)

Of a true, "he that fell and rose up again is far stronger than he who never fell." Now, sitting outside the veranda of my house, I can vividly remember my days and times at Cell 91. Although, my stay there was brief, and was not as long as some people that I met and left there, but still, my times there are what I would not wish anybody to have. After I knocked down the two final year students, it was just a matter of weeks before I appeared before the court. Nkechi was there at the court, but she had come just to witness the court session. We were both at the same police station since we were arrested, but one day, I over-heard a police officer talking to Nkechi's dad, "oga, na only if your daughter agree say the boy force am go the party go make her free o." "But, if she still dey do stronghead say na her friend and say na she say make dem go the party, oga, she go go jail o." The policeman continued. Within me, I knew Nkechi would never deny me. Not after all these years. But, reality dawned on me when I heard that Nkechi had been released few days after, and ever since then, I didn't see or hear about her again, until I saw her at the court that very day. My dad's lawyer who had assured my dad that I would not be sentenced to death had told me to pled guilty, and at the end of the court session, I was sentenced to 15 years.

I was quite calm and easy going when I got to the prison. The cell I was kept was made up of 4 other persons. A mid-fifty years old man who was convicted for raping young teenage girls. "Na them their blood fresh pass." The man said when he was gisting Odeku about his activities before he was caught. "But, I regret dos things wey I do sha o." The man said. "If person try that kin thing wit my daughter, I go cut him pennis." The man continued. Odeku was a relatively short man whose beards was so grown that it made his face look scary. He and the other two guys there were armed robbers, and were caught during one of their operations. "I be don talk say after that operation, I no go thief again." He confided in him some weeks after I got there. The fact that I was the newset and youngest made the two other guys to always treat me cruelly. There were times they took my food from me, and some other times, they mandate me to fan them with my cloth while they sleep. The old man and Odeku hardly say anything because they fear the two guys. The day I was taken to Cell 91 was the very day I refused to fan the two guys. They had earlier requested I give them my food, and I refused. After much arguements, they allowed me to be. Later that night, they requested I fan them to sleep, and I told them I have to sleep too. We started an arguement which inturn led to a fight. It was in the middle of it all that a warder came around. The fact that the guys were nice to the warder that came around made the warder tell his boss I was disturbing the peace of the prison, and that was how I was led into Cell 91 for two bad weeks.
