TEARS FROM A PILLOW

Tade's eyes were filled with tears. He himself could not believe tears had betrayed him by the way he cried. He kept packing his things in the travelling bag he had bought the previous day. Lizzy, on the otherhand could not get up on her feet. She rested her back on the plastic chair in Tade's room. "Have you taken the sweater?" She struggled to say admist tears and mucus. Tade looked at her, and tried to say something, but his voice had failed him again. So, he nodded in response to her question. He continued with the packing. On about two occassions, he had emptied the whole bag because he was not sure of what was in which bag. Lizzy stood up from the chair and walked towards him. "promise me you would not forget me when you get to America." She said with tears running down her cheeks. "Ofcourse, you know I will not. Once I work for a year or two, I'll come home to finalize our wedding plans, and then we would go to America together." Tade replied pulling her head close to himself. He had told her to come pass the night at his place in other to enable them share a memorable time together. Lizzy had not for once spent a night at Tade's place, eventhough they've been lovers for close to two years, and Tade lives in the same town where she schools. But, such a moment like the day Tade was to leave the country, she could not just object. The two lovers hardly slept all through the night, as they were locked in each other's arms and taking turn to console each other. Lizzy had called her roommate to inform her about helping her submit her 302 assignment because she would be seeing Tade off to the airport.

The morning came faster than other days, and before they knew what was happening, Tade was almost running late. The journey from Warri to Lagos would take nothing less than 6 hours, and Tade's uncle expected him to arrive at Lagos before 4pm. His uncle had helped him with the ticket, and had promised Tade he would drive him to the airport himself if he arrives Lagos early enough. The journey to Lagos looked too fast for Lizzy's liken. If she had her way, she would have wanted Tade to stay behind, but she knew for sure that if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. Lizzy kept her head on Tade's shoulders all through the journey, and Tade's uncle was already at the park waiting for them. "Good evening uncle." Tade greeted. His uncle was so suprise at the presence of Lizzy, but before he could say anything about it, Lizzy had said, "I'm just seeing him off." Tade's uncle could not help but smile as he said, "That is good. I guess your name is Ruth." He said, making a Biblical allusion to the Ruth in the Bible. Tade acted as if he didn't understand what the joke meant, and with a big smile, he replied, "No sir. Her name is Elizabeth. But I call her Lizzy." "I think we should be on our way now." Tade's uncle quickly added. Lizzy would have loved to see Tade off to the plane, and stand by the plane to wave to him as the plane takes off, but she knew that would not be possible. After waving to him and hugging for long outside the airport, Lizzy ran to Tade once again, and locked herself in his arms. She only let go when Tade's uncle walked up to them and said, "He should really go now."
