TEARS FROM A PILLOW (Episode 4)

In situations like this, you can be sure that mothers would not take things easy at all. They would go all out to ensure that their daughter's misfortune is greatly averted, and Lizzy's mum was no exception as far as Lizzy's singleness was concerned. She had personally went to pastors and prophets who told her that the cause of Lizzy's singleness was as a result of her water husband who would not allow men come close to her. They all suggested different remedies and solutions, ranging from bathing her at the river, down to the suggestion that has to deal with the prophet having sex with her to neutralize the power of the spiritual husband. Mama, as Lizzy's mum was fondly called, could not summon enough courage to tell Lizzy herself. Lizzy on her own part had taken up the issue without knowing her mother's efforts on her. Pelumi, her co-worker had advised her to see one Baba who is a specialist in such issue. Lizzy was skeptical at first, but after some time, she gave in, and met with the Baba. She was suprised when the Baba said after some incantations. "Oko omi !!!" Meaning, water husband. Lizzy knew at that point that the Baba was not good enough. She had kept the secret of her oath with Tade to herself alone, but she knew deep down in her heart that there is no other thing responsible for her misfortune aside the oath. "Thank you Baba." She said as she left the shrine.

Lizzy's life changed as the issue began to trouble her so much. She became so desperate that she attended every single's programme, every spinsters' prayer session. She had also read major books that deal with getting a life partner. She had spent over #2,000 to buy a single book titled, "How to Get Your Mr. Right." As she paid for the book, she said to herself, "I don't mind if it's even Mr. Wrong that comes my way." "Atleast, someone should come my way." She mistakely thought aloud. "You dey talk to me?" The bookseller asked her. "Oh! Sorry. I was not talking to you." She replied. Life was becoming so meaningless for Lizzy, as a matter of fact, she had started loosing weight. Her parents were mounting pressure on her, while her friends were advising her to stop going out with her car. "Atleast, that would make you meet with guys a lot, and 'he' would find it easy to approach you." Sophia had once suggested on one weekend when Lizzy went out with Sophia's husband and her kids. Lizzy was on her way back home from work one evening when she met one of her good secondary school friends, Adaobi. As they say, the day God would send one's helper, may we never be found wanting...
