ONE DAY, I WILL WRITE MY STORY

I sat on my bed 24 years after, and with my recorder on my right palm, I reached out for the "Rec" button. "Say something after the beep." The voice from the recorder said. I could not say a single word, and after some seconds, I stopped the recorder. My mind went to how faithful the recorder had been to me. I can't vividly remember how long I've been using this same recorder to do the same thing I was about doing. I tried to reach for my walking stick as I stretched my left hand towards the cabinet beside my bed. I changed my mind about reaching for my walking stick, and at the very same time, my mind went way back into where and how it all started from.

I was not born with a silver spoon, and if at all I was born with a spoon, it would definitely be a plastic or wooden spoon. I came from a middle class family with 4 children where I was the first child of the family. My parents were both civil servants who were always at the mercy of the government when it comes to the payment of their salaries. There were times my dad would have borrowed money from friends and relatives before his salary would be eventually paid, and once he collects his salary, 80% of it goes to the debt he owed, while that of my mum would see to our school fees, books and some other necessary things for the family. I got into secondary school at the age of 8, and this was as a result of my intelligence and bright attitude towards my academics. My school proprietor had advised my dad not to send me to a public secondary school, as in his opinion, I was too intelligent to attend a public school. My dad promised my proprietor he would do all that is within his ability to ensure I attend a private secondary school. He sure kept his promise, and he did all he could to ensure I finished from the same private secondary school I stared from. Everything went well in my first year in secondary school, as I received different awards which included the best student in about 4 subjects, and I was also awarded the Most Intelligent Student. In my JSS 2, I had represented the school in numerous competitions, some which I won, and some which I lost. Things were going fast, and so also was my education. But along the line, something else moved too fast. Fast enough to bring me and my family trouble and predicament for a huge number of years. Fast enough to render my blind for the rest of my life…
