One can not be so sure which one hurts her the most. Her expensive hair-do worth which she did just 2 days back, her natural hair which she has been nursing for years or possibly, her husband that just lost his life the day before. For her, it was insult upon injury. "Tradition demands", her mother-in-law reminds her again has she reaches for the clipper to cut her hair off. She releases a loud cry again to be sure it was yet another dream. Even she herself was not sure of what was making her cry. Could it be her expensive hair-do, her natural hair that is to be cut off or her husband that just died at his prime after winning a huge business contract. Sometimes, one cannot totally trust the tears in one's eyes, as they might fail at any point in time. Two single drop of tears found their way down her cheeks from her eyes. She knew a time like this would come when she accepted to marry Chike, but, she did not expect it to happen so soon. Not even without a warning. Ola did not just see it coming.
She closed her eyes, wishing it could all be a dream, and she would wake up from her dream to find Chike right beside her on their matrimonial bed staring at her just as he always do whenever he wakes up before her. But, if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. In the middle of her thoughts, the sound of the clipper brought her back to reality. Her mother-in-law has always been nice and kind to her, but this time around, tradition and the sudden death of her first son have turned her into a wicked woman. "Ola, remove that scarf". Her mother-in-law demanded, as if that was not the first time she would tell her. Her hands felt so weak as if they were not the hands strong enough to lift Chike up during one of their love plays. It was still the same hands that did not fail her when she carried her first and only son which eventaully died after 3 weeks. She knew she just had to be strong as she was just admist enemy zone. She slipped the scarf off her head and the scarf hesitated as if saying goodbye to the 6 years natural hair spiced with different hair creams and conditioners, sparkling like a newly refined gold. Ola's mother-in-law drew the clipper towards her hair. Ola closed her eyes, wishing a miracle would happen. A miracle that would stop the whole nightmare. And this time, her wishes were not horses and she herself was no beggar as a miracle surely did happen. Just when the clipper was inches away from Ola's hair, the powerholders ceased the light...
