A loud silence
enveloped the atmosphere, only interrupted, occasionally by a mild snoring
sound on a medium-size bed, that comfortably accommodated a young man in his
early twenties. Darkness ruled in the room, as the only iota of light was from
the security light at the balcony, mixed with the faint rays of the
street-lights down the road, forcing their way through the transparent curtains
that prevented the glass window from visibility. Little to nothing was visible
to the eyes in the room, but the AC, benevolently ensured that the room was in
a favourable condition for its occupant. A moving car’s honk interrupted the
loud silence without excuse, but not for long. The young man adjusted himself
on the bed to a better position, seeking for a “greener pasture” in his sleep.
The bed, which was located somewhere in the room, briefly moaned to the young
man’s repositioning, before the loud silence took pre-eminence once again. No
doubt, the young man was enjoying his sleep, probably living out his fantasies
in wonderland.
A sudden loud and
disturbing sound murdered the silence totally, bringing an end to its reign.
The familiar sound interrupted the young man’s sleep, as he tried to reach for
the device, with the intention of muting the sound. Half-consciously, he placed
his right hand on the bedside cabinet, searching for the device, but to no
avail. He grudgingly got up from the bed, and struggled through the dark,
towards the chair opposite the bed. He found the device – his phone, and ended
the reign of the alarm.
“This damn phone won’t
let me enjoy my sleep.” He murmured.
With the little light
from the phone, he reached out to the wall close to the door, and put on the
light, almost blinding his vision, and at the same time, illuminating the room.
He squinted his eyes for a while, to adjust to the sudden brightness introduced
to the room. He looked at the phone once again, to confirm the time.
“6:00 am” The phone
displayed visibly enough.
“When did I even sleep
sef?” He asked himself, as he moved towards the bed to sit for a while.
The room was not
overly decorated, and from the visible things, obviously, its occupant was a
bachelor. Clothes were in every corner of the room; on the chair, floor and
even the wardrobe door. Books were scatted around, as a small student fridge carefully
sat at the left corner of the room.
From the bed, the
young man reached for the bedside cabinet’s top drawer. He pulled it, exposing
its content. He reached for the content, and examined it with all scrutiny. It
was a gun – a Revolver – a Ruger GP100 Revolver. He swung it out, to reveal the
bullet cylinder. As he expected, there was only one bullet. A bullet that would
decide if he would live or die. A bullet that would make a lot of difference –
a bullet that has so much to say about his existence. With the gun in his right
hand, he turned the bullet cylinder with his left hand. The bullet cylinder
rotated countlessly, before coming to a halt. He closed his eyes, and slammed
the bullet cylinder back to its rightful position. He cocked the gun, and
placed it on by his head, a little above his right ear.
“Everyday is a good
day to die.” He said himself, as he pulled the trigger.
