A PHONE CALL (Episode 2)

"Hello... " Dami said again. Trying to clear the sleep off her eyes. She expected the caller to say something too, but, there was silence from the other end. She looked at her phone to check if the call was still on. "00:10" the timer showed the call has been on for 10 seconds. She wanted to end the call, thinking it was the network that was at it's worst as usual. But, she decided to give the caller a last chance. "Hello..." She said again. "I thought you would end the call." The voice from the other end said with a very harsh and unpleasant tone. Dami was surprised. "Who could call me, and talk to me like that?" She wondered. She wanted to snap back at the caller, but she had learnt her lesson some months ago when her phone rang, and the caller spoke rude to her. At first, she acted calm, but when the caller went on to accuse her of snatching her husband, she lost her patience, and gave the caller a high-level insult. All of a sudden, the caller shouted, "April Fool". It was Ada, one of her co-workers who decided to play April Fool on her. It was during break time, and she was out of the office. The lady called her, and put the phone on loudspeaker, after gathering some of their colleagues together to listen to the phone conversation. Dami was so embarrassed when she came back, as her colleagues laughed at her seriously. Ever since then, she doesn't over-reacted to unknown callers. "Please, who am I speaking with?" She asked, as politely as she could. "Call me The One." The caller replied. "The One?" Dami asked herself. She felt maybe it was another prank call. "OK. Mr. The One, who do you want to speak with?" She asked with a little sense of humour, trying to be polite so that when the caller eventually reveals his/her identity, she won't be taken for a fool. "I want to speak with Oluwadamilola Ireti Johnson" The caller said, shocking Dami to the fullest. "Hmmmm... who... are ...you please?" Dami asked, stammering a little. "I said I am The One." The caller snapped back. "Oh!  Sorry. The One. How may I help you?" Dami asked, trying to summon some courage. "Wrong question. I'm not the one who needs help here, it's you." The One corrected. Dami was confused. "I'm sure your husband has told you about his 3 days trip to Abuja." The One asked. Dami was shocked yet again. "3 days trip to Abuja?" She asked herself. Almost immediately, her phone beeped, and she checked to see the notification. It was a Facebook notification. She didn't even give it a second look when she saw the Facebook logo beside the notification. She was not in the mood for Facebook. Beside the Facebook notification were some missed calls notifications, and a text message icon too. "How come my phone rang all this while and I didn't hear?" She asked herself. "I must have slept off real bad." She concluded. She opened the message icon, and saw that the text was from her husband. She read it with great speed. "Hey Honey. Mr. Ben could not make it for the meeting at Abuja, and I've been chosen to replace him. I've been calling you since, but you were not picking. I'll talk to you later. Love love." The message read. "How did you know my husband was travelling?" She asked The One, as she put the phone back to her left ear. She was used to receiving calls by placing the phone against her left ear. She learnt that when she went for a health seminar some years back. The guest speaker made the audience know it is wrong to receive calls with the right ear as it would damage the ear quickly. "It is safer to receive calls with the left ear." The speaker explained. Dami was grateful to God for attending such a seminar, and ever since then, she tried and practiced receiving calls with her left ear, and in no time, she mastered it. "There are other important things you should be concerned about, aside how I got to know that your husband was travelling." The One said. "Other things like what?" Dami asked, as she felt her heart beating against her chest. "Other things, like your children - the twins" The One said as he ended the call.
