For some, life smiles at them once a month or worst still, once a year. As for Gbenro, life has never smiled at him since he was born. His life was nothing but a typical failure, and he was certain that life had nothing good for him at all. He started suffering right from his infant, and suffering did not part from him even as a teenager who lost his parents. Well, as they say, poverty has no relative. Only wealth has brothers, sisters, step-this, step-that, etc. Life has frustrated Gbenro to the extent that one would see suffering written all over his face from afar. There were times Gbenro would not eat nor drink till noon or later in the evening. He was working as a carrier in a nearby market, and business was always good for him during festive periods when people go to the market to buy a lot of items. It took Gbenro 4 different festivals before he could accumulate the money he used to buy his wheelbarrow, and after buying the wheelbarrow, he was certain that business would take a new and greater dimension. But, he was wrong. Business was better when he was using his head to carry loads than when he had a wheelbarrow because sometimes, he would be held down by the market traffic which made his wheelbarrow unable to move. Sometimes, he would yell at the cars and buses that blocked the road, and sometimes, he would try to navigate his way around. But, in it all, business was just not good as he could not carry more than 4 to 5 loads before the day runs out.
"There should be more to life than this" Gbenro said to himself one evening while resting on his wheelbarrow. He was particular about changing the way things are, and in no time, Gbenro became passionate about changing his status. The whole idea got so much into him that one of his colleagues introduced him to one Baba who could help him prepare a charm to boast business. "Guy, na wetin me sef dey use be that oooo." The guy explained. "Aworo (crowd puller)" The guy explained to Gbenro that the charm would bring customers to him more than other truck-pushers in the market. "but, will it reduce the traffic in the market?" Gbenro asked himself. In no time, Gbenro was at the Baba's place, but for a different thing entirely.
"Baba, Iya ti je mi. koda, baba ti je mi pelu. (Baba, I have suffered)" Gbenro said with tears falling from his eyes. "So, wetin you want?" Baba asked him. "Baba, I want to do money ritual." Gbenro said without hesitation. "I want to be so rich that suffering would be very far from me" He explained. Baba let out a very loud laughter as if Gbenro just shared a very humorous joke. "Baba, why are you laughing?" Gbenro inquired confusingly. "I am laughing because of what you said," Baba replied. "Do you think money ritual is as simple as that? Do you think money ritual is like buying bread and beans?" Baba asked him rhetorically as he let out yet another loud laughter. "Baba, I know it comes with a price." Gbenro said boldly. "He that must drink water from the rock must not consider how blunt his axe is." Gbenro explained. Baba was moved by Gbenro's persistence. "Give me your left palm." Baba commanded. Gbenro surrendered his left palm to Baba. "What is your name?" Baba asked him. "Olagbenro (wealth lifts me up)" He answered. Baba examined Gbenro's palm for a while and said some incantations. "Gbenro, do you want to hear the truth?" Baba asked, and Gbenro replied with a nod. "You are destined to be great and to be very rich." Baba said. "But, Baba, why am I not rich?" Gbenro asked with great curiosity.

Hmmmmmm……If Gbenro is destined to be rich, why then is he not rich? Will there be a way out of Gbenro's ordeal? Will money ritual be his last resort? How about Ireti, is there a correlation between Gbenro's poverty and Ireti's illness? Well, as you all know, the answers to these questions are in the next episode. So, make it a date with me as we continue the story tomorrow. Remember, it is still FATE ON A SWING.
