A DEAD MAN'S WISH (Episode 5)

*****DAILY DIET*****

=====A DEAD MAN'S WISH (Episode 5)=====

It was just a matter of minutes before the whole house became a graveyard. Everything was silent, except for the inverter which automatically turned itself on when the Power Holders ceased the light. The inverter was already low, and it was giving some warning beeps which meant it should be turned off. The inverter was one of the things I regreted buying in the house. The guy that sold it to me assured me that the inverter would last for century hours, and truly it did. Just that, after a month, it started reducing from hours to minutes, and now it does not even last up to 25 minutes. Chike laughed me when I told him about the inverter. "Na fake you go buy" He said, laughing like a jackass. He told me that his own lasts for couple of hours, "I don dey use am for about 2 years now." He said after laughing me. At midnight, they were all fast asleep. But, I couldn't sleep at all, and I didn't know what to do or where to go. I decided to go outside, and no sooner had I gone outside that our dog started barking. "How can the dog I feed myself bark at me?" I wondered. But, it was clear that things were different, and the dog saw me as a potential threat to its owners. I took a spot at the balcony, and few minutes after I was there, I saw a man walked pass the street. The man was dressed in a red cloth, and had a calabash in his hands. He was reciting different incantations and curses on a particular person. I decided to take a closer look at the man, and I was shocked to discover it was Oga Titus, the man who sells provisions and foodstuffs down the road. "Mallam Ali" He said, at the end of every incantation. Aside the type of incantation and curses he was reciting, the content of the calabash also suggested the aim behind his midnight act. An effigy tied with a red cloth, and on it, was a small kitchen knife tied with a red cloth too. I watched him as he took the calabash to Mallam Ali's shop at the other end of the street. He stood for some minutes to say a few incantations before finally dropping the calabash. "Does it mean things like this happen every night while we sleep?" I asked myself.

The morning was longer than it used to be when I was alive, but when the cock eventually announced the new dawn, I was elated. It was some minutes to 5am, and I was sure my family would be awake by then. I decided to go inside to see what was happening, but I was surprised to see that everything was still as silent as it was the previous night. Although, all of them were awake already, but nobody left their room. 5am in my house is usually a rush hour. I would have been awake by then trying to get ready for work. Mena would be in the bathroom bathing the kids and preparing them for school. Joy would be in the kitchen preparing breakfast, and by 7am, we would all be ready to leave the house. But that day was different as the kids didn't go to school, and Mena did not go to work either. After some minutes, Mena came to the sitting room to pick her phone charger. As she was going back into her room, her eyes went to the plates on the dinning table, and she went close to it. She opened the cooler which housed the beans I was supposed to eat for dinner the previous day. A foul smell was released, and she quickly covered the cooler. On her way back to her room, her phone rang. "Chike calling" Her Andriod phone announced the caller. She went into her room to receive the call, and I followed like a he-goat in its heat period. "The whole house is just quiet." She told Chike over the phone. They talked and she smiled. As she smiled, she caressed her hair with her other hand. "I can't believe I did what I did" She said with a very different look on her face. "But, thank God that was not what killed him" She added almost immediately. It was at that point I got more interested in the conversation. "That was not what killed who?" I asked myself. "wait a minute! Could it be that Mena was trying to kill me before?" I wondered still. "What for? Why?" Many questions crossed my mind almost at the same time. "Yes."  Mena replied to a particular question Chike asked. "I used it just the way you said I should." She added. The look on her face was no longer as bright as the look she had when she started the conversation. It was a sorrowful look, and her eyes were already red. "I prepared his favourite meal, and I poured a little portion in it." Mena said as tears raced down her cheeks.

"…but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way." So many things happen at night when we sleep. So many enemies come around to plant different seeds. No doubt, the world we live in today is more polluted than many of us think, especially those of us who don't see beyond our nose. Will Oga Titus' charm hurt Mallam Ali? So, Mena had the heart to poison her husband? I'm sure you didn't see that coming. Well, there are some other things you are yet to know about. You want to take a guess? Go ahead. But still, keep in touch with me tomorrow as the story continues.
