A PENNY FOR YOUR SOUL (Episode 7)

The phone did not ring for long before it was picked. Chibby was a little suprise at the hastiness with which the call was picked, especially now that he was calling very early in the morning. He was used to calling Chief, and on many occasions, Chief does not pick his calls, and when he does, on very few occasions, he would be discussing with someone else at the other end, even after picking the call. "Hello Chibby" Chief Waje said after picking the call. Chibby did not know how best to put it. "I have it sir." Chibby finally said. There was a little hesitation from Chief because he couldn't really fathom what Chibby was saying, or better still, he didn't fully believe Chibby could have got the package so soon. "Do you mean what we discussed recently?" Chief Waje asked with a little hesitation. "Yes" Chibby replied almost immediately. There was a little silence from the other end, and Chibby was certain that Chief was trying to digest what he had just said. In a quick hurry, his mind reflected back to how he had got the head. He remembered where it all began - at a table in the club. "So, who are with?" He remembered asking Anne. "I'm with my roommates" she said with a smile. "No. I mean a guy." Chibby corrected. Anne gave another smile before she answered, "I'm all by myself." Chief Waje interrupted Chibby's thought when he asked, "Can you meet me tonight?". That was exactly what Chibby also had in mind. He was hoping Chief would not require him to keep the head with him longer than necessary. He had no idea how to keep a human head, and even the few hours he had kept it, was the most challenging period of his life. "Yes." He replied. "But where?" He asked almost immediately. "I'll text the place to you later. But, come alone." Chief replied as he ended the call. "Come alone?" Chibby asked himself. "Does he think I'm even ready to share the money with anybody, to the extent of taking someone along?" He asked himself rhetorically, as he adjusted the bag where he kept the head.

As he was on his way to the uncompleted building where Chief told him they would meet that night, he had two bags with him. One with the head, and the other had his clothes and other important things. He had planned to travel to another city for sometime so as to avoid any trouble. Again, the face of the young lady he had beheaded crossed his mind again. He reminded how the lady told him about herself. "This is my first time." Anne had told Chibby back at the club. "Really?" Chibby had asked. "Yes. I'm doing it just this once to pay my school fees." Anne had replied in a convincing way. Chibby remembered asking himself if the innocent girl should be his victim or he should just try to find someone else. "She is just a poor girl trying to survive." He remembered telling himself that. Almost immediately, another part of him had questioned that proposition by asking, "is everybody not trying to survive?". Chibby was caught between two options before he finally decided to do it. "How much is your school fees?" He had asked Anne. "#55,000" Anne had replied him. "Let's go to my car. I'll give it to you. You don't belong here." Chibby had said to her with a philanthropist's voice. As they walked out of the gate, Chibby could tell from the look on Anne's face what was going on in her mind. She must have thought she had met an angel who wouldn't allow her to mis-use her body before paying her school fees. "What would an angel be doing in a club house in the first place?" Chibby asked himself,  as if he was very certain of what Anne was thinking. Chibby had been waiting for Chief Waje for some minutes before he saw him come out of a dark area opposite the uncompleted building. The dark area reminded him of where he had lured the young girl to, before strangling her to death. He went to his car to get all the tools he had kept for the job. A cutlass to cut the head, a big bowl to put the head, so as to avoid any dripping of blood on his way back, and a bag, big enough to accommodate the bowl. "Good evening Chief." He greeted. Chief Waje responded with a nod. He handed over the bag to him, and Chief Waje opened it to confirm the package. "You have done well my boy. You have done well." Chief Waje said. Chibby responded with a nod. "But Chibby, I'm very sorry." Chief Waje added. It happened fast. So fast that Chibby could not even defend himself. He saw Chief Waje brought out a gun, and that was the last thing Chibby saw before his lifeless body hit the ground.

Would you believe me if I told you that I'm short of words myself?  Well, I am really short of words. But, in it all, one thing I know for certain is what the Bible says, "there is a way that seems right to man, but the end of it, is DESTRUCTION.". "The devil comes not, but to steal, to kill and to destroy." Well, the spot light is still left on for Chief Waje as he goes ahead to fortify himself with Anne's head. Join me tomorrow as we bring the story to a close. Remember, there is a price for every soul, and some people have theirs sold for a penny. A PENNY FOR YOUR SOUL.
