ARIIKE (Episode 3)

The journey was not as easy as they thought. It was filled with a handful of dangerous and wild animals, coupled with strange spirits and demons. The two groups were in harmony as the warriors took it as a point of duty to look after the well-being of the ladies. "When we return back to the village, I'll go to Olomoyoyo village to marry one of these virgins. The fair one especially." One of the warriors said, pointing to Atoyebi. The death of one of the warriors was not enough to put the two parties assunder. It was after two of the virgins got captured by a strange spirit that the two parties started to do things differently. The warriors walked at the back while the virgins walked at the front. One other warrior had died after eating an orange he found on the floor. Fear ran through everybody's spin, especially the ladies. But, their face bacame brighter when they saw the tree from afar. On getting to where the tree was, they discovered that almost all the leaves on the tree had withered away, except for very few leaves that were left. The leaves left on the tree was not up to 14 which was the number of leaves the two parties needed, as each village needed 7 leaves each. It was just a matter of time before confusing set in. The warriors were stronger and they were able to quickly pluck 7 leaves from the tree, leaving the virgins of Olomoyoyo with only 4 leaves to pluck from the tree, as they left the tree leaf-less.

The virgins were sad as they wondered what would be the fate of their village. But, sooner or later, something happened. All the remaining warriors started falling asleep, and very soon, they were snoaring, except one. The very warrior who had ealier declared his affection for Atoyebi had added sleeping portion to the water of other warriors. "you might just need it." His mother had given him the gourd before he left. "It can make anybody or spirit sleep for hours." She added as she kissed him goodbye. He gave Atoyebi the remaining leaves he had taken from the bag of his fellow warriors, as he told her to go along and save her village. He promised her he would visit her soon after they get back to their village. The remaining virgins were amazed, but Atoyebi took the leaves, and so the ladies set out with full speed. Death visited the betrayal when his fellow warriors woke up after some hours, but there was already enough time for the virgins to go far. The warriors moved out quickly, and it was just a matter of time before they met Atoyebi where Ariike had left her. Atoyebi heard their footsteps from a distance, and before she knew what was happening, the warriors were standing right before her. "Where are the leaves?" One of the warriors asked her as he raised his matchet with range.
