"Mama, where you for know MC Classics? " Bonny asked his mother after they settled down inside the house. But, she didn't respond, instead, she looked at MC Classics' face as if to get the answers there. MC Classics also gave Bonny a look that made it clear he just asked for a very long story. "Bonny, there are some things you don't know about me." MC Classics started. "I grew up from the street where I fought tooth and nail to put food in my stomach." He continued. Bonny was shocked to hear that someone like MC Classics grew up from the street. The expression on his face said it all, and MC Classics knew he was wondering if something good could come out of Nazareth. "It was on the street I met your mother" He declared, looking at her. "Lizzy, do you remember those days?" MC Classics asked, still looking at Lizzy. But Lizzy was not interested in MC Classics' entire narration. "Why didn't you come back that very day?" She interrupted. MC Classics was caught unaware. Although, he knew he could not avoid the question, but he wasn't expecting Lizzy to ask in front of Bonny. "it's a long story." MC Classics tried to wave off the question. "I have all the time." Lizzy cut in, almost immediately. The look on her face made it clear to MC Classics that she was not ready to settle down for less. "That night, after I left where you were to get something to eat, I met the big boys" MC Classics started. "In their usual troublesome manner, they tried to collect the money I had with me. But, I was so fed up of their bullying. So, I refused to give it to them" He continued. "It led to a struggle between us, and out of anger, I stabbed one of them with the small knife I had with me." He paused. "To cut the whole story short, I was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. That was because I was already close to 20 years then." He said. Lizzy could not help but shed tears where she sat. Bonny, was also feeling very sorry for MC Classics. "So, how did you get out of prison?" Bonny asked, with all curiosity. "7 years after I was sentenced, the Federal Government decided to pardon some prisoners on Independence Day. I was among the pardoned prisoners." He explained. Bonny still had a blank look on his face, which made it obvious he needed more clarification, and MC Classics didn't deny him the clarification either. "A friend of the Chief Warden of the prison picked interest in me, and adopted me as his son. He owns the radio station where I work." MC Classics explained.
Silence filled the whole room as they all were short of words. The two girls ran inside to ask their mother a question. "Mama, shey bi me I am beautiful?" The younger one asked. "Yes" Lizzy replied. She went away almost immediately telling her elder sister that she was beautiful because her mother said so. "Something tragic happened to me also that night, after you left." Lizzy said. She narrated the story of how she was raped, and all she passed through on the street as a pregnant young girl of 16. "With the help of the free health care made available to pregnant mothers by the government, I was able to deliver the baby, safe and sound." She narrated. Bonny's face changed a little, and his mother knew the moment of truth was right before them. "Your father didn't run away before you were born. He ran away immediately after raping me." Lizzy said, facing Bonny, with the aim of correcting the previous version of the story she told him.
The house was totally different from what it used to be before Tade travelled abroad, years ago. The chairs were different, the television, the compound, and even the paintings on the walls wore a very different look. Tade walked round the living room, trying to observe the changes. "Everything has changed." He said to himself. Aside the material changes he observed, his eyes also spotted yet, another change. Martha, the housemaid he used to know, was gone - the very housemaid that led to his urgent journey outside the country. She has been replaced with Selimot, another naturally beautiful girl from the village, who too soon would become yet another prey.
