A DEAD MAN'S WISH (Episode 3)

I still find it difficult to fathom why Mena would be after my money just few hours after my death. When she got back to her seat, she cried and cried again, and I could not just understand her. But, I didn't know Mena to be materialistic at all. Our first outing in school was where I confirmed that. "What should I get for you for your birthday?" I asked her after she told me her birthday was days ahead. "Hmmmmm... don't buy anything. Let's just go out to spend time together." She replied. After our first date, the second was her birthday, and I took the privilege to ask her out. Mena is not a type of girl one would easily get, and some of my friends even told me I was wasting my time with her. "That girl no go gri for you." Paul, one of my friends warned me when I told him my plans. I understood Paul's view perfectly. Mena was a very beautiful lady, and almost every guy on campus wanted to date her. Some even showered different gifts on her just to win her to their side, and on many occasions, she rejected both the gift and the giver. When I made the move, I was optimistic about it all, and I didn't make myself look too desperate to date her. The day she accepted my proposal, I felt like I had won a jackpot. My friends did not believe me until she came visiting when my friends were with me. I did a good introduction, and the rest of the day ended with a nice discussion among us all. "Is it true?" "What happened to Jude?" Chike ran into the house asking. He just heard the news about my death, and must have left work sooner than usual. Chike was my close friend when I was alive. He was that kind of friend people would call "bosom friend". He works in a bank, and does not close from work early enough. For Chike to be at my house 6pm on a Friday evening, it means he has left a lot of work undone in his office. "Oga Chike, no dey cry like that na. You are a man." One of my neighbours walked up to him to console him. The whole scenerio was too much for me to bear. My wife was crying profusely, my children just turned fatherless, my mother just lost two people in two years. My last born sat quietly on my sister's legs unsure of what was happening, and my sister herself was sobbing every now and then, and here is my best friend crying like a little child. I felt sorry for them all, but there was nothing I could do.

Soon enough, people started leaving. My neighbours were the first to leave, and almost immediately after they left, my little sister, Joy, stood up heading for her room. Did I tell you she lives in my house? Oh! My mistake. Before she took about 5 steps, Chike said to her. "Let me carry Tade." She went back and handed Tade over to Chike. I followed her into her room hoping I could say or do anything that would make her see me. When she got to her room, she opened her wardrobe, and what I saw shocked me. My gold wristwatch I declared missing two months ago, and beside it are some Dollar notes. I didn't need to be told that my sister has been stealing from me over the time. She took the wristwatch, and held it so tightly after which tears rushed down her cheek. No doubt, she was sorry for her actions. I left her room, and headed back to the sitting room. When I got there, most of the guests were gone. But Chike was still there. He was sitting beside my mum with Tade on his laps, and Mena was now alone with my daughter, Pricillia beside her. Chike brought out his phone and did some typing. Almost immediately, Mena's phone buzzed. She picked the phone and did some typing too. At a point, I observed that Mena and Chike were typing almost at the same time. I became curious, and went close to Mena to see what she was doing. From the background, I knew it was Whatsapp. She was replying a chat from Chike. "Why would the two of them be chatting on Whatsapp when they are just opposite each other?" I questioned myself. The last set of message I saw hit me like thunder. "I love you" Chike sent to Mena. "I love you too" Mena replied, adding the symbol of a heart to it.
