In life, there are so many casualties and victims. Some are victims of decision, some are victims of wrong timing, while some are simply victims of circumstances. As for Anne, one may not be able to rightly say the type of victim that she is when she moved in with her uncle. Her parents had taken all steps for their 5 years old marriage to be fruitful. They consulted different doctors and medicine men. The former made them understand that nothing was wrong with any of them, while the latter enriched their barns and poultry with the various gifts items the desperate couple dropped at their feet in exchange for a child, irrespective of the gender. Pressure from the family did not help issues at all, and it inturn made the couple seek for all forms of assistance from various ends. But, even after 5 years of barrenness and running around for help, the couple never for once saw any traces of hope or result with all their sacrifices and efforts. They both gave up on seeking for help, and accepting their fate as barren couple. It was that same month that Anne's pregnancy came around, and exactly nine months after, a naming ceremony was done. Everybody celebrated with them, as their compound was filled to the brim that very day. Smile was on everybody's face, and even the dogs in their compound celebrated with them. Anne was treated like a Princess, as her parents provided her with all she needed. They didn't even bother themselves with trying to see if they could have another child, as they knew for sure that Anne was not as a result of their own effort. Weeks rolled into months as months passed the baton to years. Five years after, Anne's parents met their death in the hands of a reckless drunk driver on their way back from a function outside the town, and that was how Anne moved in with the Gbadebos.
Mr. Gbadebo did not fail to accept the responsibility of taking care of his brother's daughter. He brought the young girl into his own house which was filled with children like that of a fertile chicken. Mr. Gbadebo, at the age of 39 had fathered 5 children in a rented 3 bedroom flat apartment. He worked with the then NEPA, and his salary was exactly what he needed to fend for his five children. Anne was not what he could reject as he was the only person in their family who has made better progress in life. He tried all he could to make sure that he gives Anne whatever he gives his children. Lade, the woman of the house was a teacher in a public secondary school, and her salary was used to augment other basic needs in the house. Anne progressively made it to SS 3, and she sat for JAMB with her uncountable equals a year after to compete for a space in the country's tertiary institution. As luck would shine on her, she got admission that same year, but the course she was given was very different from what she has in mind. "You are even lucky to have been given admission". Her uncle had told her when she raised the idea of not accepting the admission that year. "Do you know how many people would be glad to trade places with you?" Mr. Gbadebo convinced her. His wife advised Anne to accept the admission, and change her course after year one. She accepted the admission, but unknowingly to her, she was walking into the fire where her raw gold would be processed and refined. The worth of gold in the market is invaluable, but the question is, how many people can pass through the fire gold passes through?

Yes ! Gold is priceless in the market, but only very few would accept to pass through what gold passes through, even if it comes with the promise of making us a diamond after it all. Anne has entered her own fire (tertiary institution), and the question is, will she come out as gold? Time will tell. Join me tomorrow as we take the next episode.
