BEADS (Episode 5)

The white ball with black stripes slightly raced on the rug from one end of the room to the other, touching Angella's right foot, waking her up from her reverie.  "Goal !!!" Her young daughter shouted from where the ball came from. Angella looked at her daughter with a hard-earned smile. "Goal !!!" Her daughter shouted again, as if urging her mother to play the ball with her. Of all people, Angella knew the best thing she could do in situations like that was yield to her daughter's humble request, if not, she might start crying. She picked the ball and rolled it back towards her daughter. "Goal !!!" She said, accompanying it with yet another hard-earned smile, as if to complement whatever might be seen as incomplete in her actions. As the ball rolled towards her daughter, she followed it with a fixed gaze, and when the ball eventually got to her daughter, she smiled again - this time, an easy smile.
"She looks exactly like Federick – her father." She said to herself. The thought brought to life again the memories of the good old days. Days and times when her marriage with Federick was exactly what any aspiring couple would long for. Times before things turned out the way they did. Days before Federick went on the mission to Africa. Since after the mission, their carpet changed. So did their table, their dog and their car. Federick also changed, as their marriage was not left out. She still remembered the words of Dr. Mag, and how her words expected her to cope with her husband's predicament, no matter how long it took. At first, she thought Federick would recover his memory. So, she took her to places that would help trigger his lost memory. The first week of going out was hell for her as Federick could not remember anything at all, not even where he proposed to her on her 25th birthday eve. "Do you remember this place?" She asked him with so much faith and expectation of getting a yes from him. "hmmmmmm…" He tried to remember. "No. I don't" He finally declared. Angella was disappointed. But, she felt it was too early to be disappointed. So, she continued the following week, taking him to places they have been together before the mission, doing and saying things that she felt would help Federick remember things. "Angella" Federick called, during one of their outings, a month after the mission to Africa. Then, it was becoming obvious that Angella was pregnant, and different thoughts crossed her mind as Federick called her name. He has never called her name like that. Not since he came back from the mission. Angella thought Federick was about to tell her he could remember everything. She cleared the thought off her head as soon as possible. It would be too good to be true, and she was not ready to raise her hope, only for it to be burst later. "Maybe he wants to tell me it's all a joke" She thought within herself. She nursed the thought for a while before Federick's actual words came to her.  "I appreciate all your efforts all this while. How you had to quit your job to ensure I recover as soon as possible." Federick continued. "But, I am very sorry to say this, I still can't remember anything before the day you all said I went on a mission to Africa." He added. Angella's heart almost broke into pieces. "I can't even remember who I was before the day you showed up in the conference room" He added again. Silence reigned between them for some seconds before Federick murdered the silence. "I will advise you stop making me who I can't remember, and simply take me for who I am right now." He said, dropping the bombshell. Angella could still remember the tears that fell from her eyes that day. She could still remember her decision that day to love Federick and the way things have turned out to be. "Goal !!!" Her daughter shouted again as the ball touch her left foot, waking her up again from her reverie. This time around, she picked the ball, moved closer to her daughter and bounced it gently before her. "Goal !!!" She said. This time, with a very easy smile.
